Looking at ikat fabrics to make lampshades with. The yarn is space dyed and when it is woven it creates a pattern. I ended up buying four pieces of silk. I could have got a lot more carried away!

A double sided heavy interlined doorway curtain is a good way to keep out drafts where an actual door would not be suitable. The heavy ā€˜tree of life’ fabric is backed with a grosgrain fabric which I used for the boarder that is also piped. I think I went a little mad on this one!!

I’ve had lots of my own and client’s jobs keeping me busy during these cold weeks.

I have recovered an antique footstool in a natural striped linen. This stool used to belong to my mother in law. I’m so pleased with the outcome and luckily my husband likes it too!

I’ve also made matching bolsters using the same stripe and a plain fabric coordinated with a jute braid. I’m slowly redoing all the soft furnishings in our sitting room using fabrics that I’ve been collecting over the years. I just love keeping busy, being creative, using my hands and making beautiful things!

Lovely little roman blind I made for a client’s cloakroom using denim and trimmed with a stripe. I can make a blind using any fabric you wish as I am freelance. I am also always able to offer advice as to what would look best for your windows.

Artists Without Borders
In the south of Burkina Faso, a landlocked country in west Africa, near the border with Ghana lies a small, circular village of about 1.2 hectares, called TiƩbƩlƩ. This is home of the Kassena people, one of the oldest ethnic groups that had settled in the territory of Burkina Faso in the 15th century. TiƩbƩlƩ is known for their amazing traditional Gourounsi architecture and elaborately decorated walls of their homes.

Burkina Faso is a poor country, even by West African standards, and possibly the poorest in the world. But they are culturally rich, and decorating the walls of their buildings is an important part of their cultural legacy in this area of the country. Wall decorating is always a community project done by the women and it’s a very ancient practice that dates from the sixteenth century AD.

It’s 1977 and we opened our first high street shop in the centre of Durban on Smith Street. This pinball shop changed our lives - it was so successful!
The glass display counters were the flippers. The circular rails in the centre were the bumpers and the changing rooms at the back were the targets. This put Bilbo Fashions on the map!

I’m making a day bed cover using my beloved PFAFF Expressions 3.0 sewing machine. This machine has an integrated walking foot which feeds the fabric evenly from top and bottom. Coming from an industrial background, I do own industrial sewing machines, but using my PFAFF machine on my worktop supports my larger projects better, making it much easier to sew. I really couldn’t live without my PFAFF ā¤ļøā¤ļø

Custom made bed valance using an green cotton stripped fabric. Matched with interlined curtains using a green birdsong fabric. I also used this fabulous oriental tree of life print for a Roman blind and door curtain.

I am in the process of changing the soft furnishings in our living room
I’m inspired by the natural hand crafted fabrics that I have been collecting from my travels in Africa and Asia. It will be an overall ethnic theme. In this picture is a silk ikat cushion in front of a pure linen printed button and enveloped cushion. I can’t wait to see the overall finished look. Give me some time!

Another this time from around 1974 with one of our very first photo shoots of Bilbo Clothing from the ā€œGandalf Gardensā€ era. As our business was so young, I had to model with one of our customers. I can’t remember her name, but know she was also from Germany. I made everything in the pictures, including the hats! I believe the photos were taken by the late Rene Loevendie. A photographer friend of ours who originated from Australia.
