I love a challenge and big alterations are the perfect opportunity. For these curtains, one pair was too long and the other was too narrow and too short! After shortening the first pair I moved onto the second pair, using the excess fabric we now had.

Undoing the existing heading and removing the lining I manage to take all the curtains back to their base. I then pieced them back together, joining in extra embroidered fabric on the sides and using the plain linen along the bottom. Lastly I remade the triple pleat heading, ensuring they fit perfectly at their new windows.

Now these gorgeous curtains have been given a brand new life and hopefully will last another 20 years!

What a statement these curtains make in this master bedroom! A stunning tropical print in velvet creates a stunning wow moment when you walk in. Double pinch pleat curtains lend themselves to the traditional property without being too fussy and matching Roman blinds to finish off the scheme.

A job for myself this time. A quick fix that as elevated my kitchen curtains and created a bespoke heading for the fraction of the cost. I am massive fan of bluebellgray and their fabrics and my eyes were set on this fabric for the kitchen before we even moved in. However the cost of the fabric alone was out of budget especially with a busy house and a dog running in and out the door!

So when I discovered the fabric as made to measure curtains at the fraction of the cost,I snapped them up! For a while they had just been hanging up flat at the window but it was about time I took them down and sorted the heading out.

I created this inverted pleat using the existing pencil pleat heading so now the curtains fit perfectly as if they were bespoke! This style of heading gives a similar appearance to wave heading, so is a good alternative options!

A pair of single pleat curtains for a tiny and quaint cottage in the South Downs. I repurposed an existing pair of curtains.m and gave them a brand new lease of life. I started by stripping off the old linings that had seen better days. I then washed the face fabric, to remove years worth of dust.

Once dried and ironed I started the reconstruction. Removing the top and bottom that were the most worn, I started on the new curtains. New hems, new lining, new heading. And now a sparkling new pair of curtains to sit perfectly either side of the front door.

Oh I do like to be beside the seaside! And you couldn’t get much closer to this beach hideout. Used as a family holiday cottage for the last few decades, to escape from Surrey it was due some TLC and an upgrade!

Keeping with the nod to nautical, I suggested this gorgeous stripe by iLiv. It’s subtle but has longevity that will hopefully last the next 40 years.

It means an awful lot to me when someone trusts in what I suggest and is then over the moon with the outcome. The trust between myself and a client is something I will never underestimate. Now, keep your eyes peeled for Jessica Sews venturing to Surrey in the future!

Two matching Roman blinds made for a home up in London. When ordering made to measure and bespoke soft furnishings I will often carry out a final check measure however I am happy to accept clients measurements if they are confident! No matter what though, you will always receive the attention to detail.

Pattern placement is key when making bespoke roman blinds and can often take quite a while deciding on what catches the eye first and therefore should be the main focal point. To me it was the red parrot that I centralised across both blinds.

It’s all the little details that go into bespoke soft furnishings that make them a worth every single penny!

More bespoke soft furnishings for a period property in Arundel. For a while we had gone back and forth with options on how to dress this window. The wooden panelling wrapped back to the window recess is the key feature in the room. With a large window over looking the walled garden, we wanted something that softened but didn’t distract from what was going on around it. My client found this gorgeous linen fabric and I worked my magic. I created a traditional cord and cleat blind mounted to a covered wooden baton. The blind itself is a standard fold Roman blind with full blackout interlining to minimise sun damage and create the perfect cosy snug!

What a gorgeous cosy bedroom for this little girl. Tucked away in a sleepy village growing up, surrounded by nature and now she has a snippet of that inside too! A soft velvet was used for double pinch pleat curtains. With a blackout Roman blind in matching cotton fabric to sit behind.

Corners. Probably one of the biggest bug bears for professional curtain makers. All corners should be mitred. There’s a secret technique that is used, to give the perfect and neatest 90 degree angle.

Most ready made curtains try to imitate this, to try to enhance the quality of the curtains. However it’s only ever just folded over to give the illusion. This creates an uneven bulk of fabric and questionable stitching.

If you have your ready made curtains shortens by me, you can be sure your curtains will have professionally mitred corners. For that little touch of made to measure.
