These are the women that were breaking boundaries, when we just thought they were cool tunes…
Women like Alanis, Skin, Shirley, Dolores and Nina.
They weren’t polished.
They weren’t perfect.
They weren’t trying to fit into someone else’s version of femininity.
They were loud.
Soft.
Angry.
Honest.
Awkward.
Powerful.
Sometimes all in the same song.
Without realising it, they gave a generation of girls permission to take up space exactly as they were.
Now we’re raising daughters in a world that’s louder than ever.
My hope is that they grow up knowing what these women quietly taught us years ago:
You don’t have to fit the mould to belong.
You don’t have to shrink yourself to be accepted.
You don’t have to become someone else to be enough.
Just as she is.
Just as she should be.
