"Why not just sell nappies to parents?"

It's a question we get asked a lot.

On Friday we chaired a panel at and explained why for NappyLoop, nurseries come first.

Nurseries change 195 million nappies a year. They're also one of the most trusted sources of advice and support for families.

For years, the reusable nappy conversation has been aimed at individual parents — making it their problem to research, buy, and wash. And it's an invisible behaviour. There could be parents at your baby sensory class using cloth nappies and you'd never know.

Now picture one nursery. Fifty families. Seeing reusable nappies every single day without having to do anything themselves. When it just works, it stops being unusual and starts being normal.

That's not just a nappy service. That's how you change a norm.

Early years settings are now required to develop Climate Action Plans. Ofsted expects nurseries to support children's understanding of the world. And nappy waste is the single biggest item in a nursery bin.

Everything is pointing in the same direction. Someone just needs to make it easy.

That's why NappyLoop was built for nurseries first.

We're excited to share something we've been working on for a while — the new NappyLoop website is live! 🌱

New brand, new site, and a much clearer picture of what NappyLoop actually is: a fully managed cotton nappy service built specifically for nurseries.

We deliver fresh cotton nappies. We collect the used ones. They're commercially laundered to NHS hygiene standards. And we return them ready to use again.

No hassle. Just better nappies, on a loop.

Have a look: nappyloop.co.uk

If you know anyone who works in a nursery or early years setting, we'd love it if you'd share this with them 💚

So excited to share this — I'm chairing a panel at Nursery World's Big Day Out on 15th May! 🙌

We're talking all things reusable nappies and earlier potty training — and why it matters for nurseries right now.

Come along if you want to:
💩 Help children get potty trained faster
🗑️ Cut waste and carbon in your setting
🤩 Stand out to parents who care
📈 Future-proof against rising waste costs

I'll be joined by an incredible lineup — Cheryl Hadland (, 40 settings and counting!), Rita Lemos from , and the brilliant Prof Mark Miodownik from the Plastic Waste Innovation Hub.

Drop a 🙋 in the comments if you're coming, or save this post to remember the date!

Did you know nappies are one of the top 5 contaminants found in recycling bins across the UK? 😱

Over a million people are putting dirty nappies into their recycling bins. And they're not trying to be irresponsible — they're trying to do the right thing.

The problem is the labelling.

That "Green Dot" symbol on nappy packaging — two arrows forming a circle? Over half of people think it means the packaging is recyclable. It doesn't. It just means the manufacturer paid into a European packaging recovery scheme.

More than a third of parents who've put nappies in the recycling say it's because the packaging showed what looked like a recycling logo. A fifth say it's because they're called "disposable" and assumed that meant recyclable.

But no disposable nappy in the UK can go in your household recycling. Not one.

And when a nappy ends up in a recycling truck, it's not just that nappy that's lost. The whole truckload gets rejected and incinerated. All that careful sorting — gone.

In Brent alone, 240,000 nappies ended up in recycling bins in a single year.

The rise of "eco" nappies labelled "biodegradable" or "compostable" is making things worse. Half of people believe these nappies are recyclable. They're not. But who can blame anyone for thinking so when that's exactly what the packaging implies?

Every pack of single-use nappies should carry a clear message: this product cannot be recycled.

Or better yet — we could all just use fewer of them 😉

Have you ever been unsure which bin nappies go in? You're not alone 👇

I was a plastic pollution campaigner at Greenpeace.

And I still couldn't make reusable nappies work when I had my first child.

This morning, I told that story in the House of Lords.

Because if someone like me couldn't do it, the problem isn't parents not trying hard enough. It's the system.

Parents need laundry infrastructure, they need support, and they need to know they're not doing it alone.

That's what I'm trying to change — starting with nurseries as the hub.

A packed committee room, cross-sector engagement, and a clear message: we need a government strategy, council procurement reform, and honest labelling that sorts the proper solutions from the greenwashing.

The conversation is just starting. 💬

🎉 We've been invited to speak in parliament next week!

The All Party Parliamentary Sustainable Resource Group, chaired by , is getting serious about nappy waste

The North London Waste Authority have been pioneers in reducing nappy waste through their scheme, so it's an honour to have been invited by them to speak on this panel.

We're really looking forward to learning from the other panellists and answering the audience's questions.

Let's get nappy waste moving up the political agenda! 💪

Let’s talk about the potty training "readiness" trap. 🚽

As parents and EY professionals, we’ve been told to wait for a "wee-wee dance" or a child to tell us they’re ready.

But did you know the concept of readiness was heavily promoted by the disposable nappy industry in the 80s?

In the 1970s, 83% of children were out of nappies by 18 months. Today 1 in 4 children aren't toilet trained when they start Reception.

It’s a win for corporate profits, but a loss for:
❌ Children’s health (UTIs and constipation)
❌ Children's development (less time for play & learning)
❌ Parents and nursery staff time (& bank accounts)
❌ The planet (more single-use plastic)

The Gov has put out some guidance for nurseries and Early Years educators to help turn the tide, & a coalition of charities and expert organisations has done the same for parents (links in comments).

But I want to know:

What is the biggest barrier you face either at home if you're a parent, or in your setting if you're an EY professional? Is it parent / nursery pushback? Lack of knowledge? Logistical?

I'd love to hear your tips for success, as well as your challenges in the comments!

The truth about nappy recycling 🚫♻️

You've probably seen stories about nappy recycling schemes in Wales and Bristol. Sounds promising, right?

Here's what they don't tell you.

Plastic recycling is collapsing. Around 1 million tons of capacity lost across Europe between 2023-2025. And nappies? They were never really recyclable in the first place.

75% of a disposable nappy is plastic - multiple different polymers mixed with cellulose and human waste. The economics are brutal and there's no viable market for what comes out at the end.

You might see PR stories about cellulose being turned into signs (while the plastic sits in a warehouse) or shredded nappies in roads. But there's no process for turning a used nappy into another nappy. And even if there was, it would be so expensive no one would ever do it.

Even Pampers admits it - after years of pilot programmes, they've concluded there's "no single answer" and scaled back their efforts.

TerraCycle, one of the world's leading recycling innovators, won't touch nappies because they're "expensive to move, expensive to process."

We throw away 3.6 billion single-use nappies in the UK every year. 432,000 tonnes of waste going to incineration or landfill.
We've seen this playbook from big corporations before: promise future solutions, fund a few pilots for good PR, then quietly scale back when the economics don't work.

The technology to recycle nappies exists. The business model doesn't.

This is why NappyLoop exists.

The only real solution to nappy waste is to stop creating it in the first place.

Reusable nappies with professional laundry service. No hassle for nurseries or parents, NHS-standard hygiene, and actually solving the problem instead of promising to solve it someday.

WE DID IT! We've smashed our £10,000 target! 🎉

Thank you thank you to everyone who pledged, shared and supported us. It's been overwhelming and so gratifying to see how much this mission resonates with you all.

Apologies for the belated update - we've been heads-down with trial prep and working on something rather special that we'll be announcing very soon... 👀

Rewards Update: If you've pledged, you should have received an email from Crowdfunder. Haven't got it? Please message us!

The campaign continues! We've set a stretch target of £11,000 to protect our intellectual property - the innovative designs and systems that make NappyLoop work. This investment will help us scale from four nurseries to forty, then four hundred, and beyond!

You can still join us: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/nappyloop

The trial is happening. We're changing nappies for good. Thank you for being part of this revolution! 💚

🌟 Big news! We've partnered with Muslinz to create something special for nurseries.

Their tried and tested cover designs + our new nursery-specific inserts = cloth nappies that actually work in busy commercial settings.

The early feedback has been fantastic - nursery teams are telling us these are so much easier than traditional cloth nappies.

This is exactly what we hoped for: proving the sustainable choice can also be the practical choice.

Do you know anyone who works at a nursery? Please share this post with them - they'll understand exactly why this matters!

Together, we're changing how nurseries (and eventually families) think about nappies.
