🧶Spinning Apprenticeships available🧶

Are you aged 18–25 and interested in learning a beautiful traditional skill?

I’m offering a free 6-week spinning apprenticeship right here in Dumfries and Galloway.

I have two spaces available for this first round of apprenticeships.

This is a relaxed, hands-on programme focused on spinning essentials using both drop spindles and traditional wheels, with a big emphasis on our wonderful local Scottish wool breeds. You’ll get to know the fibres that come from right here in our region and turn them into beautiful yarn.

Programme Details
• Duration: 6 weeks
• Time: 2 hours per week (flexible – evenings, weekends or after work, arranged to suit your schedule)
• Cost: Completely free
• Location: My studio in Glentrool Hive, Dumfries and Galloway (you’ll need to travel here) DG86SY.

What I’m Looking For
• You must commit to the full 6 weeks
• You’re happy to be photographed and featured in promotion (social media, etc.)
• You’re enthusiastic and open to learning

My Approach
I’m a fun, non-technique-essentialist teacher. With three years of spinning under my belt, I still clearly remember what it’s like to be a complete beginner. I focus on the fundamentals in a way that actually makes sense when you’re starting out — no intimidating perfectionism, just joy, creativity, and real progress.

My Aims
I want to help keep these heritage skills alive by teaching the next generation. Together we’ll make good use of local wool, create a welcoming space for creativity, and build a friendly network of young spinners in the area.

Other apprenticeships will be available throughout the year — so if you miss out this time, keep an eye on my website and social media for future opportunities.

If this sounds like something you’d love to try, please apply via the online form below. Places are limited and applications will be reviewed on enthusiasm and commitment.

I can’t wait to spin with you!

Apply on my website before 19th July

I’m in love 🤩
I had the pleasure of setting up and servicing this beautiful Henry Pouncey wheel — and what a gem it is!

Harry (Henry) Pouncey was from Moniaive in Dumfries and Galloway. A founder member of the Dumfries Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers, he crafted spinning wheels in the 1970s and 1980s.

Pouncey was our closest wheel maker here in Dumfries and Galloway.
While I’ve always taken pride in championing Haldane wheels from Fife (they’re my go-to showcases at festivals and even feature in my logo), I’d happily give my right arm for a Pouncey.

Amy spotted this one in a local charity shop — a genuine once-in-a-lifetime find.

Amy, I hope you enjoy every single spin on this stunning wheel. It’s a real piece of local history.

Where have I been?

Everywhere 🤪

Balancing the day job, mum life, and all the beautiful chaos in between - but I’ve never stopped spinning, knitting, crocheting, and diving into every fibre art that brings me joy.

The best part?

I’ve finally started sharing my skills. I now have the best spinning students, and there’s nothing quite like spinning together out in the field, surrounded by nature.

Life feels full and good.

I’ve missed this space but I’m ready to be back 🧶🐏

Some catching up to do so stay tuned if sheep and fibre is your thing too.
