Gail Baxter and I spent some time recording and caring for some lace garment donations. They are both Nottingham Lace, but made from different threads. The first looks like a viscose fibre and the second is almost certainly wool. Interestingly, the skirt of the sleeveless dress is also made on a lace machine… using what appears to be the same thread in the upper bodice. It has no holes, but Gail and I still consider it Nottingham ‘lace’.

Discovered that in Plauen, Leavers lace (or Bobinet as they call it) was known as ‘Black Weaving’, because of the black staining from the graphite lubricant from the machines. They made a small amount of this type of lace in Plauen, although the main lace made is ‘Plauener-Spitze’ embroidered lace.
