Starting nursery or school can feel like a BIG deal… and sometimes I think the parents are more nervous than the children! 😂❤️

As a former Early Years teacher, I thought I’d share some of the things I’d actually focus on before they start.

And you’ll notice I haven’t mentioned writing their name, counting to 10 or knowing all their sounds…

Of course those things are lovely, but there are so many other skills that will make their day easier, being independent, having a go, asking for help, communicating with other children and managing those big feelings.
And please don’t feel like your child needs to arrive at school already knowing everything. That’s what they’re going to school to learn. ❤️

If you’re a September starter parent and there’s something you’re worrying about, ask me in the comments! 👇

I’ll answer from my experience as a former Early Years teacher. 👩‍🏫❤️

August 🤍

A little bit of messy play, a little bit of summer, a holiday, lots of playing… and two very loved little boys.

But looking back through my photos this month has made me realise something.
I hardly have any photos of me with the boys.
Even after a whole week away on holiday, I can count the photos of the three of us on one hand.

And honestly, that makes me a little bit sad.
Because one day these are going to be the photos I treasure most. Not just the ones of the boys, but the ones where they can look back and see me there too. Holding them. Playing with them. Laughing with them. Being their mum.

So I’m making a little promise to myself to get in the photos more.

Not because they need to be perfect. Not because I need to look a certain way.
But because I want the boys to have photographs of their childhood that include the people who were right there living it with them. ❤️

So here’s to making more memories and remembering to actually get in the picture too.

Goodbye August 🤍

A little reminder that simple activities can be SO good for little ones 🤍

Playdough is one of those activities that looks simple, but there’s actually so much going on!

✨ Fine motor skills
✨ Hand strength
✨ Hand-eye coordination
✨ Creativity & imagination
✨ Language development
✨ Sensory exploration

And the best bit? You really don’t need lots of fancy equipment.

Try adding cutters, spoons, forks, cupcake cases or even natural treasures you find outside. 🌿

💡 Claire’s Tip: Let them explore it their own way. It doesn’t need to become a perfect dinosaur, pizza or flower; the squeezing, rolling, poking and squashing is where so much of the learning happens. 🥰

Save this one for a rainy afternoon! 💕

Okay, I know I’m probably getting ahead of myself talking about September when we’re still enjoying the summer holidays 😂☀️

BUT… autumn messy play really is just around the corner!

And if you’re more of a “I’ll think about September when September arrives” kind of mum… I see you 😂 There’s still time!

Just make sure you’re booked by 29th August to secure your space ❤️

Who’s Type A and who’s Type B?! 👇😂
