The other Guild members were inside the hall. The range of activities was impressive. The Guild members are always willing to share their knowledge. One new member wove a band for the first time and was very successful.

Our August Guild meeting was a very busy one. Alyson Mason led a group through the process of skirting and sorting the locks of a fleece and washing the fleece prior to next steps of carding or combing. There are so many pics that there will be two posts about the meeting.
The fleeces were Zwarbles and Shetland lamb. Everyone seemed to enjoy sorting and washing the fleeces which was hard work. The activity took place outside.

July 4th is out Guild meeting. Some members were learning about indigo dyeing over two days. It was lovely to see their work at the end of the second day. Thank you Cia for your wonderfully organised workshop.

In the other room, spinners were spinning, knitters were knitting and weavers were weaving. Lots of chat and skill sharing.
Anne was finishing some of her pennants for the Guild bunting. Sheep were the theme.
Jo was card weaving sheep and I was using a rigid heddle and backstrap for my sheep band.
Cecilia had brought her tablet weaving loom- a table top variation of the one found on the Oseberg ship. It was her first visit to the Guild.
Vivian was weaving a twill pattern in lovely soft wool.
Ros had warped her inkle loom with Bakers twine - rather bumpy yarn that wove more easily when waxed. The finished band is impressively sturdy.
Socks and a scarf were being knitted. What a talented group. We all learn from each other. I needed advice about tapestry band weaving and Olivia is going to try band weaving next month.
A busy July day and so relaxing.

It’s Tour De Fleece starting this Saturday 4th July! What is Tour De Fleece? TDF is a month of spinning alongside the Tour De France cycling event. People sometimes join teams and set themselves spinning goals like spinning every day or spinning a certain amount of fibre or different breeds! Are you doing the Tour De Fleece this year?

Saturday 4th July is the next meeting of the Durham Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers.

There will be the usual spinners circle and weaving tables set up in the main hall, as well as a workshop in the side room! Bring along your projects to work on in the main hall, you’d be amazed how much you can get done when everyone around you is beavering away on their projects too.

The Shibori & Indigo dye workshop will be run by expert group member Cia who will be sharing techniques for binding and stitching fabrics to create resists, these fabrics will then be dyed in an indigo vat! There are still spaces available, please contact the treasurer to send a £10 deposit and secure your spot. (The workshop runs Friday afternoon and all day Saturday, but if you can’t make Friday afternoon it’s not a problem)

The meeting starts from 10am onwards and we look forward to welcoming current and prospective members alike every month ☺️
