The Great Barn at Great Dixter, built 500 years ago, it is now used for green woodworking. I do love a good wood shed and this is probably my favourite. Some years ago, our local conservation society held the opera in this old barn. I’ve got lovely memories of that late summer evening with my late Mum and my sister.

Hole Park, Rolvenden in bluebell season.

Henry de Hole came to the Weald of Kent in the middle of the 13th century and I assume this is how Hole Park got its name.

In 1911 it was purchased by Arthur Barham, and has remained in the Barham family ever since.

Arthur was a territorial soldier and was recalled to military service at the start of the First World War. He was invalided out from the trenches in 1917, sadly he had lost his eldest son from shrapnel wounds at Ypres in 1915. He retired to Hole Park and began developing the gardens into a place of peace and regeneration. In 1940 he offered it as a hospital/home and it was taken over by the army as the barracks for Searchlight and Artillery units based in the area.

In 1946 it was released back to the family but lay empty for over a decade, until 1955 when David and Catherine Barham decided to make the main house into a family home again.

Their son Edward and his wife Clare have been the custodians of the estate since 2003. (Edward Barham served tea, crisps and cake to my friend and me today after our stroll down to the bluebell woods🙂).

About 24 years ago my beautiful loyal girl helped me plant about 1000 bluebell bulbs. Every April/May when they flower brings me happy memories of our late summer evenings establishing our very own mini woodland.

The beautiful daffodils have all come out down our lane.

Daffodils
By William Wordsworth 1770-1850

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

My husband had an appointment in a nearby village this week, so I took the opportunity to go for a little walk whilst waiting for him.
Some of the gardens were looking very beautiful with the spring flowers in bloom.
The village green is known for its resident wandering geese. I think one knew I was an ‘outsider’, he kept his beady eyes on me! Can’t blame him, it’s a lovely space to protect.

I managed a quiet little stroll around the muddy lanes. I love a misty morning, very ethereal.

I’ve had quite a few messages recently enquiring about access to my eBay and Etsy stores. Just to let everyone know that I have put them on hold for the foreseeable future. It’s been a busy few years family wise, and now new plans are afoot to put our future dreams in place. I’m hoping eventually to go back to my vintage stores, but for the time being this page will just be for enjoyment.

Our muddy winters lane looks so much better with a pretty sunset.
