Have you ever wanted to work with wool? Here at our wool studio we’re looking for a new part time member of staff to assist in all areas of yarn production - including dyeing - and also to work in our lovely little yarn shop Assa Marra Wool Studio

Based at Assa Marra Wool Studio, you’ll be working across both Assa Marra Wool Studio and Susan Crawford Vintage as part of our small family team. We’re looking for a friendly, practical and reliable person to help with the day-to-day running of our wool studio, shop and events.

The Role Includes:
• Preparing and winding yarn
• Banding and labelling products
• Assisting in the dye studio
• Packing customer orders
• Serving customers in the shop
• Helping at workshops, classes fibre crafts
and events

We’re looking for someone who:
Is friendly, reliable and organised
Enjoys practical hands-on work
Is happy in a role that can be physically demanding at times
Has an interest in knitting, crochet or fibre crafts
Enjoys working as part of a small team
Retail experience would be an advantage

Base at Assa Marra Wool Studio, Staveley Mill Yard, Kendal, Cumbria. Starting August/September (training will be provided) Hours to be agreed.

NEW PATTERN RELEASE - THE STRIPED SUN TOP

The Striped Sun Top is your new go-to for sunny days, beach holidays, and warm weekend knitting. With its chic low back, elegant halter neck, and timeless nautical stripes, it looks incredible paired with everything from your favorite high-waisted shorts to breezy palazzo pants. Meu, who works in the studio and is known to many of you who visit our little shop, kindly agreed to model our new sample and has styled the top with a pair of customised cut-off shorts to give the top a more contemporary feel. It really is one of those vintage knits that looks great worn in either a vintage or a modern way.

Adapted from a 1939 Stitchcraft pattern which offered just a single sized pattern, the Striped Sun Top is knitted in the round from the bottom up in an all-over 1×1 rib and is designed to be knitted approximately 28½cm (11in) smaller than the intended wearer and to stretch over the body. The back of the top is cast off above the waist and shaping is then worked at each side of the top to create a pleasing sloped upper body. Nautical style stripes in three colours create a stylish look along with the elegant halter neck itself which is fastened at the back neck with crocheted button loops and decorative buttons.

I originally released this pattern back in 2012 with 6 sizes instead of the one vintage size but have updated it again and have now graded the pattern to include fourteen sizes to fit 75cm (30") to 152cm (60") chest.

Its knitted in 4-ply (fi*****ng weight) cotton and uses a very economical amount of yarn. I've knitted the sample shown in my Cotton Breeze yarn - 100% mercerised cotton - with the first size using just four 50g balls. Its also a super quick knit - it took me a little over a week to knit the sample, so certainly a pattern you could get knitted up for this summer!

I've been so excited to share this pattern with you and I couldn't be happier with how it's all come together! Charlie took these beautiful photos on the hottest day of the year and somehow managed to make me look reasonably cool, calm and collected!

Clarissa is the next pattern in my wonderfully talented friend Tess Young's series of sock patterns inspired by Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway. This design's delicate lace patterning is inspired by the titular character, Clarissa Dalloway. The pattern is inspired by both Clarissa's delicate femininity but also the paths she has chosen in life which she looks back on throughout the book. Tess has cleverly used the intricate lace motifs and twisting stitches to represent this whilst creating a truly beautiful sock design. The pattern comes in four sizes and has both written and charted lace instructions so you can work from which you prefer. The socks are knitted in my unique Lock Sock yarn hand-dyed at our studio - Tess has used the colourway Chemise, a delicate shell pink.

For the first time, I'm delighted to offer a special kit which not only includes the yarn and pattern for the Clarissa socks, but also a stunning edition of the book which inspired it.

The Wordsworth Collector's Edition feels truly special, with hardback cover and gold foiled text. Woolf's prose is just beautiful, and in these pages you'll be swept into Clarissa's world; a snapshot of London in the aftermath of war, woven together with reminiscences that contrast contemplative internal worlds with the hustle and bustle of the city. I've always loved merging my love of literature with our designs and this first book and yarn kit combo is hopefully the first of many.

Here’s just a the tiniest glimpse of a new sock pattern from my dear friend Tess Young which we have been working on for quite some time and trying to plan the perfect photoshoot for this stunning design. We finally managed to get what I think are just the right photos to tell the story of the Clarissa socks, inspired by the Mrs Dalloway character herself.

I won’t share any more for now but just to say, the pattern will launch on Friday along with a very special kit.

A very very exciting announcement!

I'm launching my very own luxury Christmas hamper, packed full of hand-dyed yarn as well as the first-ever Susan Crawford Vintage Annual, plus some extra little treats to make the festive season even more magical.

The Annual will include five fabulous new colourwork accessory patterns inspired by my vintage archive, and the hamper will include all the yarn you need to make all five patterns. I'll be hosting a lovely KAL after Christmas so that we can all knit them together.

Here it is, the Cumulus neckerchief! This lovely pattern introduces intarsia, duplicate stitch and embroidery on a small but perfectly-formed canvas. Small enough to be manageable, whilst still being beautiful and useful.

The design is closely related to my Clouds shawl; both patterns use the same techniques, inspired by the work of Duncan Grant and in particular his textile design, Clouds, which features an abstract pattern of soft shapes, broken up with dots and cross-hatching.

If you're new to the techniques used in this pattern, don't worry - I've included links to some handy video tutorials to help you along the way.

Cumulus is designed in my Byre British wool yarn, hand-dyed by Charlie of course! Since this yarn comes in 25g skeins, you can treat yourself to the complete kit (including the PDF pattern) for just £45.10.

This year is one of several secret projects and its extremely difficult not to share any of them with you as yet, but I'll finally be revealing one of them very soon. But can you guess what this secret project I'm working on is?

Its going to be a wonderfully luxurious festive treat.
I'll be designing some gorgeous new colourwork patterns inspired by my vintage archive.
There will be beautiful yarn, hand-dyed by Charlie at our Lake District studio.
It includes a fun new publication.
This is something I've never done before.
Quantities will be strictly limited.

So yesterday was my birthday, and as is my habit, I avoided talking too much about it, particularly as I’ve reached an age where I prefer not to think too much about it and for so many years now I’ve also not been at peace with who I’ve become as a result of illness and multiple surgeries.

However a couple of months ago Charlie took this lovely photo of me as part of a photoshoot for the little neckerchief I’m wearing, and looking at at it, I can see someone actually reasonably comfortable in her own skin. Surgeries, touch wood, are for the foreseeable future, over, and I feel more like myself than I have for ten years, and yes, I definitely look those ten years older, but I think I’d be happy to see this picture on the back of a book telling people this is me. I’m now in my 6th decade, and I shouldn’t hide away as a result of that and social media algorithms are just going to have to put up with it!

Can’t say how long this post will stay up for as I’m already bricking it about going public about age, but I’ve gone public about everything else that’s happened to me so I’ll try and be brave!
