Before the website, the configurator, and the virtual fitting room, this was how we introduced Alex Rose Fine Tailoring to the world.

A folding business card with small cloth samples attached. You could feel the quality before a single word was exchanged. No explanation needed.

Harold designed it because most business cards told you nothing about the person behind them. He wanted ours to be impossible to throw away.

The technology has changed considerably since then. The standard has not.

Ian first came to us a few months ago for a jacket. He came back for another. This time, a navy windowpane check with a subtle burgundy overcheck, single-breasted, two-button, finished with a crimson pocket square worn over a soft blue shirt.

There is a difference between a client and a customer.

A customer makes a transaction. They arrive, they buy, they leave. The exchange is complete and that is the end of it. There is nothing wrong with that. It is how most commerce works and it works perfectly well for most things.

A client is something different. A client is someone whose name Harold knows, whose measurements we keep, whose cloth choice from three years ago we can still tell you. Someone we think about when a new collection arrives because we know it would suit them. Someone who trusts us not just to make a jacket but to make the right one.

What we have found over eighty years in this business is that the word you use to describe the people you serve shapes how you treat them. If someone is a customer, you focus on completing the transaction. If someone is a client, you focus on the relationship. The jacket is almost a byproduct of that.

At Alexander Rose, we do not have customers. We have clients. Some of them have been with Harold for decades. Some are just beginning. But every one of them is known by name, not by number.

Father to son.

Harold's father (on the left) passed the tailoring business to him (on the right) in the 70s, along with everything that mattered more than the business: the eye for cloth, the patience with a fitting, the belief that a suit should be made to last.

What Harold set out to make for every client is exactly what he made for his. A suit built seriously enough to outlast the occasion it was made for. With room to be altered as life changes around it. One a man can one day pass to his son.
