It’s not for lack of trying

Yesterday’s post was our most popular this year. It’s fantastic to know there are lots of people who support our mission and share our values. At times it has felt like nobody is really bothered but I’ve kept telling myself it’s just that people don’t see our content like they did in the past rather than nobody cares.

The funny thing is that whilst the message was important it only reached more people because our friend shared it on her stories which unfortunately is the reality of Instagram in 2026.

It’s ridiculous that the only way of a post reaching more than 300 of our own followers who have followed us to see our content is by having an influencer share our post. Yes to reach new accounts I get it but not to reach our own followers.

With Astrid kindly sharing our post to her stories we were able to reach 5000 people who don’t follow us as well as 10,000 of our own followers.

I see posts with people talking about trial reel however our trial reels only reach 100 accounts which makes the whole thing pointless.

The irony isn’t lost on me that only a few hundred people will see this post and even less will read this caption. As kind as it was for Astrid to share our post she obviously won’t share every post. She’s got her own thing going which is brilliant.

Finding a way of building on this momentum is key to growth and reaching people whose values are aligned with ours. I’m always keen to hear your suggestions.

Way Back When

7 years ago we launched Rubbish London with a design that was so popular we couldn’t keep up with demand.

Then one day it all changed. As much as we loved the design we found out it was damaging the planet and as a brand built on sustainability we couldn’t keep doing it.

It was keeping scraps out of landfill but it was also contributing to the micro plastic problem.

It was around this time that we looked for alternatives, not just for our prints but also the fabric we used to make our clothes.

Interestingly it started the decline in demand for our products. People bought into the story of saving scrap fabric from landfill but we were robbing Peter to pay Paul.

What this did show us and we didn’t realise it at the time was people by into a story even if that story isn’t completely accurate. Creating something striking from waste made money. Eliminating waste doesn’t because it doesn’t produce the same aesthetic’s.

Where we went wrong

It’s not easy. Everybody gives you different advice and if you’re like me you are driven by the desire to make fashion better for the planet.

The trouble is if you lead with this you’re going to struggle. We spent so much time and money creating a sustainable product that we simply didn’t have the budget to create desire.

What we should have done was create desire first.

The Million £ Question?

Sharing the reality of building a sustainable fashion business from my experiences over the past 7 years.

As well as showcasing new products from both Rubbish London and the brands we work with I will also be sharing my journey warts and all 💚♻️

Seven years ago we set out to prove clothing could be made from recycled textile waste.

We achieved that.

What we didn’t achieve was building a business model that could sustain it long term.

Selling at wholesale price to make recycled cotton clothing more accessible only works at volume and if we carry on this way we will cease to exist.

So we’re evolving.

The mission hasn’t changed.

The way we achieve it is.

Thank you to everyone who’s supported us so far. The next chapter starts now.

❤️
