Freeweaver Studio is pleased to be part of Open House London Open City 2026 once again, our fourth year in a row!

This is what we’re planning in our new location:

Fri 18 & Sat 19 September, 2–6pm
Studio 27, Meantime Studios, Greenwich SE10

A working weaving studio using maritime fibres — h**p, flax and jute — on Japanese floor looms. Freeweaver continues a tradition of making on a site that once housed the National Maritime Museum textile restoration and archive department.

Alongside the open studio, a collaborative photography exhibition with Britta Jaschinski, Environmental Photographer of the Year 2026, presents handwoven garments captured on the Greenwich foreshore.

Free entry. All welcome. Registration via openhouse.org.uk essential (online bookings open house.org.uk from 19 August).

Cloth from the Forest 01 August - 31 August 2026

We are now entering the second weekend of showing Cloth from the Forest at Freeweaver Studio’s Weavers Loft in Greenwich.

The exhibition brings together wild silk, handwoven cloth, cocoons, yarns, tools and field research from East India. My relationship with these materials began during a three-month textile residency with silk and jute communities in Odisha, Assam and Meghalaya.

This work inspired me to create the Festival of Natural Fibres, alongside Kishore Shah and the late Paula Wolton. It now seems important to continue with the initiative, after four substantial Festivals in London (2018 - 2022) and travelling exhibition of Natural Fibres from 2019 - 2024 around the UK.

“Cloth From The Forest” is the first of a series of month long exhibition at the studio as part of a continuing exploration of natural fibres, hand processes and the relationship between cloth, landscape and livelihood. Photo 2 is a new piece of handwoven forest silk by Erna Janine.

Visits are by appointment.

There will be a guided tour of the exhibition on 15 August, Booking is available via Eventbrite (free)

It’s August and the h**p at Contemporary H**pery is getting ready to be harvested. Freeweaver Studio is delighted to be taking part in the H**p Harvest Retreat, joining a wonderful gathering of artists, makers, growers and educators celebrating the remarkable potential of h**p.

Throughout the retreat, participants will have the opportunity to explore the many uses of this extraordinary fibre through workshops, demonstrations and conversations that connect craft, sustainability and contemporary practice. We’re looking forward to sharing our approach to handweaving with h**p yarns, exploring their unique texture, strength and natural beauty on our Japanese floor looms.

It’s not too late to get your tickets via www.wakelyns.co.uk

, a puppeteer and long-standing member of the Freeweaver community, has been weaving with us since our first year in London.

As an artist in residence, she partly developed a body of work for her puppetry practice at the studio, exploring how woven cloth, structure and movement could contribute to character and performance.
