If your sewing project calls for bias binding, you CAN buy it ready-made – but it’s useful to know how to make your own so you can choose the width, colour, and print 🌸

Making bias binding is a great way to use up fabric scraps too! ✂️

Swipe through to find out how to make it – with or without a bias binding tool 👉

If you are using a tool, make sure you get the right size. E.g. a 12mm (1/2in) maker creates 12mm (1/2in) single fold bias binding, or 6mm (1/4in) double fold bias binding.

Once you know how to make it, you can use it to finish necklines and armholes on projects such as the Leah top + dress, where a facing would be too bulky, or to add a fancy detail to the loose edges of facings, such as on the Sonny jacket and Noa pinafore. Search ‘bias binding’ at tillyandthebuttons.com for full tutorials on both uses 🧵

One pattern. Two completely different Leah looks by 🤩💕

Both created with thifted fabric - the first one a gorgeous Liberty lawn peplum top with the signature side ties, the second a sweet shift dress sewn in a floral plaid 🌸

One of our favourite things about our new Leah pattern is how versatile it is. Sew an easy-wear shift top or dress, add the gathered skirt for a peplum top or tiered dress, and play around with the optional side ties.

There’s SIX different looks in total - who’s going to be the first to sew them all??

Let’s talk side ties 🎀

This optional piece of our new Leah sewing pattern adds a whimsical detail that’s bang on trend. Try it on the peplum top or midi dress versions.

The side seams around the ties are left open, but it’s less revealing than you may think - the more sceptical members of the team were pleasantly surprised when they tried it! If you’re still worried about flashing extra flesh, and don’t want to omit the ties, you could always sew the side seams shut with the ties sandwiched between 🪡

And yes - it is breastfeeding-friendly! 🍼🍼

Will you be adding the side ties to your Leah top or dress, or keeping the side seams clean? Let us know which team you’re on! 👇

Okay, confession time… this was the Leah version I told the rest of the team I’d be least likely to make 😅

I’ve never really thought of myself as a shift dress gal. As someone with a bigger bust, I’d kind of just written them off over the years. But then my Pinterest feed became FULL of chic French women in simple shift dresses with head scarves and sandals, so I thought… okay fine, I’ll give it a go.

And I’m pleased to say, I reeeeally LOVE it 🥰

I wore mine layered over a simple white tee, back when I thought the heat wave might be the end of me last week, and it’s SO comfy and easy to wear. I like me a mini length, so chopped the hem where I wanted it.

The fabric is a navy + white linen viscose blend that I unearthed from my fabric stash (sorry I can’t remember where it’s from!). It’s got lovely drape but still holds the shape well 👌

This version feels very “throw on and somehow still look put together”, which is exactly the energy I want from my wardrobe right now.

Happy Leah launch week to my fellow Buttons 🥳

AKA the kind of sewing pattern that has you planning your next version before you’ve even finished the first 😅
