Perched at an elevation of more than 14,000 feet (4,267 meters), Bolivia’s Laguna Colorada is instantly recognizable thanks to its red-and-white waters. The red tint comes from pigments and sediments in the saltwater lake (as well as algae), while the white islands are borax deposits. Solstice is the name of the new baby giraffe at the St. Louis Zoo. It was born in December, on winter solstice. I was hoping for a shot of baby and mom nuzzling. While I waited (for almost two hours), the zookeeper told me I might never get a shot of that. I did, finally, get this shot, which I really like. Solstice is three months old in this shot.
