Today marks the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings. ‘Operation Overlord’, the D-Day invasion of Normandy by Allied forces on 6th June 1944.
To record and commemorate D-Day the RSN workroom was commissioned in 1968 to create an appliqué piece depicting the events leading up to and including the invasion through to victory in the Battle of Normandy in August in 1944.
Measuring 272ft the ‘Overlord Embroidery’ consists of 34 panels each 8 ft high by 3 ft long in size. It is 41 feet longer than the Bayeux Tapestry.
Although the piece was created over 25 years after the actual events the RSN sourced fabrics from the uniforms of that time to match the design as accurately as possible. More than 50 different fabrics were used and all elements were signed off by the MOD. It was very important that all the key people had the right ribbons for the time of the conflict and not ones they had achieved later.
It took the team of 20 specialist embroiderers 5 years to bring the designs of Sandra Lawrence alive.
The piece is on permanent display at
