What I really appreciate about vintage menswear from the nineties is the louche comfort that comes from generous cuts. There were no mean skinny cuts with bum freezer jackets and trousers so tight they threatened one’s manhood - still seen on our streets. Luckily those over-tight looks seem to be disappearing, often replaced by shapeless ‘comfortable’ sportswear which requires no thought or sense of style to wear.
However, the wider, looser clothes of 80s and 90s Armani and others, echoing US and UK styles of the 30s and 40s are creeping back. We can affordably buy into those looks by searching out vintage.
Here I wear 90s wide-cut, high-waisted and pleated trousers from Polo Ralph Lauren and a silk and wool jacket from Armani. Comfort meets style.

A vintage Prince of Wales check suit from the early 90s. Double breasted, wide lapels, low buttoning point, full-cut pleated trousers which haven’t turned out quite as I hoped, but overall a nice period vintage suit.

Wearing a cream barathea dinner jacket (or tuxedo if you’re from across the Pond) at a photoshoot earlier this year.
With the festive season looming black tie events may be in your diary. A white or cream dinner jacket will make an alternative to a black evening suit, but is perhaps best kept for warmer weather, themed parties, cruises or outdoor events.
