Perfect fit isn’t something you “add” at the end. It’s created by checking the garment on the stand as you build, adjusting the structure as it develops.
Musetta’s La Bohème costume for the RBO is a good example — constant stand checks to refine the silhouette and ensure the final fit is reliable.

I’ve been drafting patterns for an unusual set of tailcoat tails this week.
The shapes needed to be re‑engineered so they move correctly and keep their line.
Sharing in case it helps anyone working on historical or performance‑based tailoring.

Different bodies mean different shapes, but I often only have one mannequin free.
Padding allows me to match each set of measurements quickly and accurately while moving between projects.
It’s a reliable method for anyone juggling multiple bespoke builds.

Sharing a small sustainability swap from my workroom:
Instead of fusible interfacing, I often use domette.
It adds structure without the plastic‑based adhesives, keeps the fabric breathable, and gives a softer, more natural finish.
It’s a simple change, but it makes a real difference in both feel and longevity — especially for garments that need to move and perform.

Step 4: Level the Hem on the Stand
Once your layers are married and fully settled, it’s time to level the hem.
Hang the garment on the stand, padded to the wearer’s measurements, so it sits exactly as it will be worn.

Work around the hem slowly, marking the true level all the way around.
For stage work, I keep the centre front about 1" higher — it reads perfectly straight from the audience.

This step gives you a crisp, accurate hem that matches the garment’s real hang and avoids any distortion caused by uneven grain or fabric growth.

Step 3: Marry the Layers
While the garment is hanging, start by running your fingers along the seam line (or where the seam will be).
This helps the satin and organza settle into the same length and grain.

Once the layers have relaxed, pin them in place while they’re still hanging.
Then hand‑tack to secure that balance before you move to the machine.

This removes the tiny mismatches that cause puckering once you start sewing.

Step 2: Let the Fabric Hang & Equalise Your Layers
Once the satin and organza are basted together, hang the panel or garment on the stand.
Let it sit long enough for gravity to release any micro‑tension between the two layers — organza grows differently from satin, so this step is essential.

Keep the tension neutral; you’re stabilising the layers, not tightening them.
This prevents one fabric feeding faster than the other under the machine and stops puckering before it starts.

Puckering happens when the two layers of fabric aren’t sitting in the same tension, length, or grain at the moment they’re stitched.
Part 1: Prepare the fabric properly.
For satin backed with organza, I cut both layers on the same grain. I keep the organza slightly larger because it shifts more, then trim it down after basting. I also try not to handle the pieces too much before stabilising — satin marks and bruises very easily.

There isn’t one “right” way — it depends on the body, the type of corset, and the inspiration behind the design.
Different styles need different drafts, and that’s where the fit is truly shaped.
