Imagine if one day everyone knew your culture…

Just by a different name.

That’s the story of so many South Asian textiles.

The pattern the world calls “Paisley” was originally known as “Buta”. Words like “bandana”, “khaki”, “dungaree” and “cashmere”, all trace their origins back to South Asia, yet many of us have no idea.

For centuries, artisans across Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and the wider region carved, dyed, wove, embroidered, and printed textiles by hand. These crafts travelled across the world, influenced global fashion, and became part of everyday life, but somewhere along the way, many of the stories behind them became less visible than the products themselves.

Desi Archive was born from a simple idea:

If we’re going to admire these traditions, let’s also remember where they came from.

Let’s remember the names.
Let’s remember the artisans.
Let’s remember the history.

Because heritage deserves recognition, not just inspiration. ♡
