Over 600 Dog Farms Shut Down in South Korea Due to Dog Meat Ban
Since the government passed a law banning dog meat consumption, 623 dog farms in South Korea have closed, accounting for 40% of the countryβs total 1,537 farms.
Following the 2024 ban, 32% of mid-to-large-scale farms (housing over 300 dogs) have ceased operations, with 60% of the remaining farms planning to shut down by the end of 2025. The Ministry of Agriculture expects the ban to be fully implemented without major hurdles.
The law, passed in early 2024, prohibits dog farming, slaughter, and distribution of dog meat. To support affected businesses, the government offers compensation of $170β$450 per dog and low-interest loans for transitioning to alternative trades. Authorities also plan to rehome remaining dogs or send them to care facilities instead of euthanasia.
