I’m back making hats and headpieces again this year; I got a new hat block shape for Christmas and have recently dug it out to use for the first time and I am so pleased for how they’ve come out.

Facebook is quite rubbish at notifying me of messages so I do have an instagram which I use, which has the same username!

Really really proud of this one; I dyed the hood myself which came out perfectly, then blocked it on my new block which also came out perfectly, then I stumbled on these flowers which compliment it so well.

I am sooooo happy with how it came out and this one is for my personal collection and likely will be for one of the days at Royal Ascot
🌺💕💖

Not sure how many hats I’ll be making this spring as my repair on my house starts around the Craven meeting so I’m having to pack up so much stuff out of harms way! Enjoyed making these to ease the stress of arguing with insurance companies!

Another percher hat made entirely from scratch on my new block, she’s lined with felt too.
A different style where I wanted the focus to be more on the end of the end that sits above the ear and culminated in an elaborate swirl on the top.
This one maaaaay be for sale but I haven’t decided yet..

I wasn’t happy with how this turned out originally; I put the flowers too far back, not positioned well and had it the wrong way (you’re supposed to wear them over your right eye but I suit photos showing my left side so I needed to switch it) so while laying in bed last night I thought up how I wanted it to look.
I moved the flowers forward, added the arrow feather and then I was happier.
I slowed down cause I rushed this yesterday and regretted it but likely what I had done was reversible..
Now to find a suitable race meeting to wear this to… Royal Ascot maybe 🤔

First time blocking sinamay on the new hat block and I was a little naughty and used 4 layers (the usual is 2) cause I wanted the really vibrant colour to show here; is it perfect, no.. am I happy with my first attempt though.. yes.
I lined the edges with the petersham ribbon used to tie the winners prizes from Glorious Goodwood (this ribbon was Vandeek’s for his Richmond Stakes Group 2 win, perks of my job!) so maybe it’ll bring me luck! 💛
Finished with some yellow orchids I had from a project from 2023
Hopefully I’ll wear her sometime this racing season

Getting back into the swing of things in 2025

This weekend I decided I’d have a go at blocking some new headpieces on a newly purchased hat block, as well as trying my hand at dyeing a capeline that you use to make the hat itself.

Both went well, the light blue base blocked well and after cutting off the excess I reinforced it with wire, then lined it with a matching baby blue cotton liner which I sewed in.

I also had a left over fuschia dye from last year so I dyed a natural colour capeline, as well as a piece of scrap that I had to see how they would turn out and may become an embellishment for a future hat.
The capeline came out a little rosie red but upon it drying fully it has come up a pinker tone so I am happy with that!

Then while they were drying I used another piece of scrap capeline to make a navy headpiece on the new block. I will likely line that tonight or later this week, as I have some left over navy felt that matches it well!

Once that’s done I am going to have a play around with blocking some sinamay straw fabric over the new block too.

I am in love with the shape, it’s a rounded teardrop percher and very ‘in’ for racing headpieces.

For 2025 I don’t know how many commissions I am going to take on, or should I say be able to take on as, at the start of December, both my kitchen and bathroom were flooded through no fault of my own (a neighbours house sitter left a tap on) and I’m going through the insurance process of stripping both rooms down and replacing everything so I am unlikely to be able to stay in my home while this happens so with so much building works and uncertainty I may just make headpieces for myself, my family and a few selected friends this year.. we shall see

Got home late last night after finding my horse had lost a shoe, but managed to block the bottom of this headband ready for wiring.

Also having a little experiment with an old straw hat to see about blocking it over a round block and stiffening it so we’ll see how that turns out when it’s fully dry!

Started this headband last night, stretching tbe sinamay over the block and pinning it.
This is a custom piece for a friend who has a wedding to attend in a couple of weeks so once it’s dry and I get home this evening I’ll be removing this from the block, then blocking the underside and wiring the outter headband..
Then to make a bow
