Hello September! it really feels like we are saying goodbye to Summer and an early hello to Autumn. I see it in the trees, feel it in the air, sense it in the flowers and if I am honest I am ready for it. It might be too soon in the traditional calendar of seasons but I can’t wait for my favourite season of the year. This seasonal shift is the one I welcome with open arms.

It didn’t take me long to walk the garden upon returning home from holiday to see if anything had survived the long hot summer. My healthiest looking dahlia did not survive the rain storms and had been wind swept across the bed (one day I will learn to stake them) An excuse to cut and create, et voila a moment for the Night Silence isn’t she a beauty! Paired with the blush pink dahlias, zinnias and crimson amaranthus the perfect palette for this transition into the new season x

A summer garden bowl or jelly mould to be precise.

The last of the sweet peas and the first of the dahlias as they start to find their stride.

The perfection in colours, tones, markings, and petal formation of dahlias blow me away each and every time! Each season I notice a new variety or colour that I hadn’t seen before and wonder if I will ever know them all! But then I wonder if part of the joy in these gorgeous flowers is in the discovery and I really don’t want that to end 💞

In other news I have a couple of spaces left on my Introduction to Floristry course, running on the 18th September. This is the only group in person class I am doing this year and is perfect for those who love flowers but never really know what to do with them. Across the day we will be learning how to make a hand-tied bouquet, perfect as a gift or for a vase arrangement in your home. A beautiful summer table scape which we will hopefully sit and enjoy over our lunch break as well lots of tips on conditioning and caring for cut flowers and some wiring techniques too. This really will be a wonderful immersive day spent with the flowers, being present and creative, is there any better way to spend a day on your own or with a friend??

Turning the heat up… 🌅🔥

If you’ve been following my stories this week, you’ll know I’ve become ever so slightly obsessed with the Cornish sunsets we were treated to when visiting family.

Every evening the sky has been putting on a different show, layers of glowing oranges, fiery reds and flashes of hot pink, each one reminding me that some of the most beautiful colour palettes have already been created for us.

Perhaps that’s why this bouquet feels so familiar.

It reminds me of standing still at the end of the day, watching the sky change by the minute and wondering how nature manages to make colours that feel so alive.

There are bouquets that whisper…
…and then there are bouquets that sing.

This one feels like a summer sunset in flower form. 🧡❤️💗

It maybe an Autumn palette but it’s all Summer!

I did a trip to the fancy farm shop in the Cotswolds at the weekend and fell in love with three sunflowers that cost a small fortune so I rummaged around in the garden to see what would go with them and here’s what I found:
Smoke bush for all the froth
Orange helenium - grown for my lounge and love of a big russet orange velvet sofa
The first of the cosmos - hence there is only one.
Some chocolate cosmos
Some dark cherry scabious - left overs from the sunset bouquet so grown by a local flower grower (abi beszant florist flower farmer)
Buttery Achillea - bit of a mistake as I wanted peach but it worked in here so it’s like it was meant to be
Penstemon - flowers have all gone but they left a beautiful burgundy seed head which was perfect for this
Et voila a recipe for a summer vase that looks like Autumn sprinkled with some late afternoon light and I’m kinda in love 🧡✨

British Flowers Week 🌸🌷🌼🌺

A little note of appreciation to all the flower growers here in the UK, because what you do is quite simply remarkable.

It’s one thing to love flowers. It’s another thing entirely to grow them and build a business around them when so much is beyond your control. The weather, pests, disease, fluctuating costs, changing seasons and all the other challenges that come with working alongside nature. Honestly, I am in constant awe of what you do.

Every stem represents months of planning, nurturing, patience and care. And because of that, you bring so much beauty, joy and wonder into the world.

In a world that often wants everything instantly, growers remind us that some of the most beautiful things still take time.

As a florist, I know I couldn’t do what I do without you. The flowers I work with every day begin their journey in your fields, tunnels and cutting gardens, and I will always do everything I can to champion and support British-grown flowers.

Many of our growers are small independent businesses too, and local support makes such a difference.

I discovered this week that beauty is registered in the same part of the brain as food and love. I found this little insight fascinating, that the two things we need to survive are processed by the brain in the same way we do beauty…my conclusion is that we are wired to take in beauty as part of our daily needs. Beauty is not frivolous or a nice to have, it’s actually essential.

So to all the creatives out there that sometimes hang back, for thinking your work doesn’t have an impact. It really does! we all need the beauty you create more than ever 💗

So here’s my contribution to your daily beauty intake, aren’t those little bleeding hearts “Dicentra” like tiny works of art in their own right….they literally blow my mind 🤍

Pricing is one of the biggest challenges I see florists face, especially when you’re building.

Not because you don’t care.
And not because you’re not capable.

But because it’s rarely just about the numbers.

It’s influenced by so many things:
– fluctuating flower costs
– lack of a clear structure
– inconsistent demand
– uncertainty around your value
– and the fear of losing bookings

And when the bookings aren’t coming, it’s so easy to land on one conclusion:

“It must be my pricing.”

But often, it’s not that simple.

Sometimes it’s:
– visibility
– clarity in your offer
– trust
– positioning
– or simply timing

Because pricing doesn’t sit on its own, it sits within your whole business model.

Lowering your price might feel like the quickest fix, but it doesn’t always solve the real problem.

What does help is having:
✨ structure in how you price
✨ clarity in what you’re actually charging for
✨ confidence in the decisions you’re making
