💡 Things I Wish More People Knew About Crochet – Episode 2

Apparently size isn't everything... what it's made of matters too. 👀😂

ANYWAY... back to crochet. 😇

If you've ever picked up a crochet hook and immediately thought, “Nope. Absolutely hate this thing,” it might not actually be the size that's causing the problem.

Metal, wood/bamboo and plastic/acrylic hooks all feel different to crochet with. Some give you more glide, some more grip, and sometimes switching the MATERIAL while keeping exactly the same hook size can completely change how your crochet feels. 🧶

Now, anyone who knows me knows I'm absolutely a KnitPro Zing girl. 😂 Give me that smooth aluminium glide and I'm happy – they're the hooks I use myself and the ones I personally think are bloody brilliant.

But that's MY preference. Your perfect hook might be completely different – and understanding what the different materials actually do can help you work out why.

And that's one of the lovely things about having a local yarn shop: you can come in, pick up different hooks, feel the difference and have a chat about what might suit you before deciding. 💜

So Plymouth crocheters, where do you stand?

✨ Metal
🌿 Wood/Bamboo
🩷 Plastic/Acrylic

And is there one type you absolutely CANNOT get on with? 😂

Would you like to see some fluffy balls? 👀😂

September has arrived, which means I am officially declaring BIG POM-POM SEASON open. 🍂🧶

We've got a gorgeous selection of 11cm faux fur pom-poms in the shop at the moment — from super soft classic colours to tipped, multicoloured, patterned and sparkly varieties. ✨

They're gloriously fluffy, gloriously oversized and absolutely perfect for finishing off your autumn and winter makes. Pop one on top of a knitted or crocheted hat, add them to the ends of a scarf... or just come in and squish them. I won't judge. 😂

They're available now at The Bright Stitch in Stoke Village, Plymouth, so if you're starting to think about your autumn makes, pop in and have a rummage through the colours. 💜

Important question though...

Are you a subtle little pom-pom person, or does your hat need the BIGGEST FLUFFIEST BALL POSSIBLE? 👀😂

Calling all Plymouth knitters! 🧶🍓

The innocent Big Knit is back - and this year, we're determined to make it our biggest yet... with a target of collecting 10,000 little hats! 🎉

For every hatted innocent smoothie sold, 30p is donated to Age UK. But your knitting can make a difference even closer to home. 📍

Each local Age UK charity has a target, and the more hats we collect, the more funding comes back to support older people in Plymouth - so every little hat you knit really does make a difference! ❤

Don't know where to start? Head to our website to find all the stuff you needle: https://www.ageuk.org.uk/plymouth/get-involved/innocent-big-knit/ 🔗

Good morning Plymouth 👋🌧️

I don't think I've ever been quite so pleased to wake up to grey skies and rain! After just how dry it's been lately, it feels very, very welcome.

And if the grey outside has you craving a little bit of colour, I've got plenty of that waiting for you in the shop 🌈🧶

I'm back behind the counter today for my first day of the week, surrounded by all this gorgeous hand-dyed yarn (there are worse places to spend a rainy Tuesday!).

A little heads-up that opening hours are slightly different this week:
🧶 Open as usual Tuesday–Thursday
🚪 Closed Friday & Saturday

We're taking what will likely be our last little trip away this year to go and spend some time with family, so if you were planning a yarny visit this week, make sure you catch me before Friday.

For today though, the door is open, the yarn is colourful, and I'm here in Stoke Village if you fancy popping in for a browse, a natter, or a little rainy-day yarn therapy 💕

Please dont forget we are open today 10-4 but closed Friday & Saturday this week. 🩷🩷🩷

Doesnt Lou at Stitch & Splodge make it easy and so fabulous 😍😍😍

Granny Square Day……… 🧶

My current project (I’m saying that pretending I don’t already have another 8 started projects squirreled away 🤦‍♀️🤣) is this fabulous Granny Hexagon Cardigan.👌

I’m loving making it and has kept me company whilst watching Wicked Pt.2, 2 episodes of The Sewing Bee and endless episodes of House (my current TV go-to). It involves being able to count up to three and I’m using a gradient yarn so I don’t even have yarn ends to weave in (yep, a game changer!)

At this rate, it might be ready for autumn! (Please note; I did say MIGHT!)

I had the fabulous advice from Jade The Bright Stitch who is just over the road from us Stitch & Splodge. There is so much gorgeous yarn in this local (to Plymouth) yarn shop that to have someone’s experience to help choose is invaluable.

Title of pattern; Stylecraft Granny Hexagon Cardigans Stylecraft
Pattern number: 9965
Yarn: James Brett Aurora double knitting
Colour: AU05

The pattern really is very easy to follow and the yarn is a dream to work with (80% acrylic 20% wool). It’s not split at all, the colour shades are well blended and it’s soft to handle. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ review 😊

Naturally I will wear it as soon as it’s finished, so keep your eyes peeled! 👀

What have you made using the traditional Granny Square pattern?
