Artist spotlight:

Brighton based ceramicist Hiroko creates decorative slipware pieces with a really charming and unique character.

Hiroko’s ceramics are illustrated with her signature hydrangea or harmony bird, each plate hand drawn with slip and slightly different from the next.

Her distinctive colour palette of earthy dark browns and a vibrant yellow honey glaze make her work instantly recognisable 🌼 🤎 and beautiful statement pieces to add to your home.

We have a large and small hydrangea plate available as well as this particularly charming harmony bird.

I’m hoping to start adding a few special pieces like these to the website so that those of you who can’t make it to our new shop in person can still shop the beautiful curation of artists & makers work that we have there.

Friends, we’re down to the last couple of pairs of Harrier Boots.

There’s just sizes 40 & 41 available, all the rest are sold out!!

We’re planning to make another small batch but that won’t be ready until Oct at the earliest so I’d suggest taking advantage of these last couple of pairs while you can.

And if your size is already sold out send me a message and I’ll put you on the waiting list. That way you’ll be the first to know when they’re available again.

Sunday sun ☀️

Boots & a heatwave don’t really go together so I’ve been enjoying just how many people have been discovering our boots and trying on various pairs these past few weeks, despite the soaring temperatures.

Top tip: if you’re thinking of shoe shopping in the heat the best time of day for trying on is always morning, before your feet feel hot & swollen.

The shop is open today 11-5 if you fancy coming to take a look and maybe even try a pair.

Considering a pair of our Made-to-Order boots?

I’ve got all the amazing leather options hanging in the shop for you to choose from.

I’m talking about the special stuff; the metallics, the leopard or snake prints, gold, silver, coral and electric blue to name a few.

They’re all one-off skins that we know will make into an incredible pair of our Wren or Jackdaw Boots.

We’ve got a few boots made up across the different leathers to give you an idea how they’ll look, and having the skins on hand allows you to see and feel the leather before you order.

If you live too far away to visit in person we do have an online swatch service so you can receive a physical swatch of your favourite 3 leathers.

And of course if you have any question about Made-to-Order please just ask me.

Our hand painted brushstroke boots have been really stopping people in their tracks and I think it’s because they’re not something you’ll see everyday.

Made in a soft and natural veg tan leather each piece is hand painted with a brushstroke pattern before being stitched. Every mark is made with a considered yet seemingly random application making each pair truly unique.

As part of our Made to Order collection these boots are handcrafted here in Sussex by our shoemaker Tom.

This technique is available on our 2 signature boot patterns: Wren & Jackdaw and you can choose between a leather sole or our practical winter sole.

You decide and we’ll make them for you. And if you need any help or advice, please just ask.

The big mission for this week is to make a plan and set dates for our first shoemaking workshops.

We’ll be to inviting you to come and make your own pair of our signature boots so keep an eye on here for more details and info.

Before you ask, there’s no previous shoemaking experience required. This will be a workshop for someone interested to try a new craft and walk away with a pair of boots they’ve made themselves. And what a feeling that would be.

Sunday in the shop is looking very much like this ☀️

Alongside our shoes is a beautiful curation of art & handcrafted pieces from makers whose work has something really special about it.

Lots of the makers are people I’ve long admired online and never had the chance to see in real life.

A photo of something handcrafted is one thing but seeing it in person is a different experience entirely. To pick it up, feel how it’s made and to see the details, imperfections and the quality is always so much nicer than clicking a button online.

So if you’ve always wanted to see work by .mr.ben and more, then come and pay us a visit in Alfriston where we have a very lovely selection of pieces.

Weekend outfit ideas: Hawk Boots and a hand woven basket.

We’ve got a lovely selection of .dear.maker willow baskets in store to choose from.

Simple shapes intertwined with subtle details of rope or white willow combined with handles made of leather or wood. And all woven by Lisa in the most beautiful secret woodland here in Sussex.

We love them for their charming and gentle nature, and for the lovely mix of textures and colours in each basket.

The shop is open Sat & Sun 11-5 if you fancy coming to see them in person.

Here’s a question we’ve been asked a lot this week:

“Do we make all our shoes at the shop in Alfriston?”

Nope, we’ve got a workshop 20 mins away in Sussex where the real shoemaking action happens. It’s a functioning workshop so it’s messy, and noisy at times so we’re keeping a bit of distance between that and the shop which we’ve created as the perfect place for you to see and try on our boots.

Whilst our Made to Order and Bespoke shoes are all handcrafted here in Sussex by Tom we also make some of our signature styles at a small, family run factory in the Marche region of Italy.

They specialise in traditional shoemaking, still use a lot of hand techniques that most factories can’t and won’t do which is why we love them. And they make the smallest of small batch production for us.

As with all the best relationships it’s a partnership; we design & develop each style in our workshop, then when we’re happy with the look and the fit, the samples we’ve made head over to our friends in Italy to produce. Partnering with a manufacturer like this was a way for us to be able to grow and retain our hand crafted quality.

As for the shop very soon we will be offering shoemaking workshops in our magical upstairs room so watch this space for more info…
