Your clothing has one job in the mountains: to keep you moving comfortably in whatever the weather throws at you 💦 ☀️ ❄️ 🌪️ (And let's face it, that can be anything from scorching heat to a snowstorm, and often everything in between - all in one day!)

You need a layering system that works with your body, not against it. 💪

Here's one reason that matters more for us than most kit advice admits: women's temperature regulation can be drastically affected by fluctuating hormone levels. Which is exactly why being able to fine-tune your layers beats one big warm jacket.

Our Layering Guide breaks down all four layers - what each one does, what to look for, and the things most guides skip when it comes to women's clothing.

When Wanda Rutkiewicz was climbing the highest mountains on Earth, technical clothing made for women was a rarity. High performance women's-specific jackets and base layers were few and far between, and equipment shaped for a woman's body (boots for a woman's foot, a pack built for a woman's back, or a harness with female proportions in mind) was practically non-existent. More often than not she took on the world's most challenging peaks in gear designed for men's bodies - and succeeded on those mountains anyway.

Wanda grew up in Poland, but she didn't always dream of summits. She was an athlete first, good enough at volleyball to play at national level, and she trained as a computer engineer in an era when very few women did either of those things. She only found her passion for the mountains at university. Within a decade she was one of the best high-altitude climbers alive, man or woman.

In 1982, Wanda led an all-female expedition to attempt to be the first women to climb K2. During preparations she broke her leg badly on Mt Elbrus, when another climber slipped and crashed into her. Most people would have found the long recovery hard enough, but Wanda hauled herself the entire 100km-plus walk-in to K2 base camp (eleven days, up to 5,000m) on crutches, splinted and running on painkillers, just to be with her expedition team.

They weren't successful that time - but four years later, on 23 June 1986 Wanda became the first woman to summit K2 and survive, and she did it without supplemental oxygen. She stood on top during the mountain's deadliest season on record, when thirteen climbers never came home, including Frenchwoman Liliane Barrard who summited the same day as Wanda.

Despite being told, on repeat, that the routes were too hard, the conditions too serious, the sport too dangerous for women, Wanda led the first all-female ascent of Nanga Parbat — no oxygen, no high-altitude porters. A decade before that, she'd led a team of women up Gasherbrum III at 7,952m: still one of the highest first ascents ever made by women.

Wanda called her mission to climb all fourteen 8,000m peaks her "caravan of dreams." She reached eight summits. In 1992, aged 49, she disappeared high on Kangchenjunga, on what would have been her ninth. Her body was never found.

Hydration hacks for women in the mountains - because it is HOT out there right now!

Did you know? Women actually do sweat less than men, and have less overall body water to begin with, so we experience heat stress during exercise faster than men. 🥵 So it’s even more important for us to nail our hydration, especially on long hot days in the mountains. Here are our top five tips:

💦 Plain water isn’t best 😱 Adding a small amount of sodium helps transport the water your drink into your blood stream quicker than plain water. Your digestive system will thank you.

💦 Skip the high sugar (‘hypertonic’) sports/ energy drinks – they are great for giving you a fast energy boost, not good for actually hydrating you (in fact, they do the opposite: high sugar concentration pulls water from your blood stream and into your gut to help dilute it).

💦 Look for ‘isotonic’ hydration solutions which match the concentration of sugar and salt levels found in your bloodstream, and are therefore absorbed faster.

💦 For easy on-the-go hydration, tablets are convenient – but pay attention to the recommended dose (some are for 500ml, some 750ml – which is annoying if your bottle has a 1L capacity!)

💦 You can make your own hydration solution – a pinch of salt with a teaspoon of sugar in 500ml of water, plus a squeeze of lemon to make it taste nicer. It’s quick, easy and cheap! (If you're feeling fancy, sub the sugar for maple syrup - tastier and even better for shuttling sugar!)

The sun's out but no Lakeland summit is free of a stiff breeze, even in mid-summer. ☀️💨 This is exactly the kind of weather that talks you out of packing an extra layer. Then you top out on somewhere like Blencathra, the wind picks up along the ridge, and you're very glad you put that layer in after all.
This is the moment the Thermal Power Hoody earns its place. Hood up, high collar zipped, and it takes the edge off the wind, giving just enough warmth while you tag the summit. Then as you drop down out of the wind and the sun comes back full force, it disappears into your pack (it's only 325g after all).
We built this hoody over a cold, wet winter of testing, but the real challenge is a warm day like this one — because the piece that lives in your pack all summer has to be worth carrying when it's 22 degrees at the car park. We think this one is.
Honest note: it's an active fit, cut to layer over a base. Like a bit more room? Size up.

Why I started .gear 🌄

👋 I’m Ronnie, founder of Vertura

I spent 15 years working as an outdoor clothing designer for mountain brands.

I kept getting told there was no point designing the most technical gear for women: there weren’t enough of us to justify making it. We would just buy the men’s version in a size down.

I’m telling you, as an average size woman with curves that DOES NOT WORK. We are shaped differently, we have different needs (hello, going to toilet!) and frankly we deserve better.

After having to make my own insulated clothing to climb Ama Dablam in Nepal, I realised that I had the skills to address the issue the industry was ignoring.

Women shouldn’t have to put up with sub-standard clothing in the mountains.

I built Vertura as a business that never has to justify the needs of women to a boardroom full of men.

"Ignore male egos. Believe in yourself."

That's the advice Adele Pennington gave at the Mountain Medicine World Congress last month. We had the privilege of sponsoring her talk, and we wrote it up so more women could hear her message 👏

Adele has guided *Everest* twice. She's climbed six 8,000m peaks. She's one of very few British Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructors. And she's done all of it as a 5-foot-nothing woman in a very male-dominated world 💪

Her story of dragging a misogynist Royal Marine client up Tower Ridge at blistering pace until he was reduced to tears is... 🔥

But beyond the brilliant anecdotes, she said something that really stuck with us: men seem to have an inbuilt confidence, like self-doubt was never installed. As women, we tend to overthink, question ourselves, doubt our competence. What if we just... didn't? 🤷‍♀️Not in an egotistical way - just quiet confidence that our skills, experience, and resilience are enough.

Head to The Handbook to read the full piece - and send to your female friends who need to hear this.

Every year the International Society for Mountain Medicine, the British Mountain Medicine society and the UIAA brings together leading experts to share research and perspectives at the Mountain Medicine World Congress. This year, Vertura had the pleasure of sponsoring one of the speakers at the Wome...
