The building we stand in was built as a mission hall and rest point for fisher folk in Lerwick. This image from around 1900 shows women walking down North Road; you can just see our building between the two women on the left.

Life in Shetland at that time was not easy, and they stand as a testament to Shetland’s women and their hard work. On International Women’s Day we always think of where we came from and the history behind us 💛

From sheep to scarf.
This piece began as raw fleece from Cheviot and Jacob sheep in Bratton Fleming, North Devon.
I washed the fleece by hand, spun the yarn myself, then dyed it using madder, one of the oldest natural dyes, before weaving the cloth slowly on the loom.
Working this way means every stage of the fibre’s journey passes through my hands — from fleece to yarn to finished textile.
Cheviot adds strength.
Jacob brings softness and natural colour variation.
Madder gives the warm earthy tones.
Slow fibre.
Local wool.
Hand spun. Hand dyed. Hand woven.

Handwoven warmth.
This scarf was woven slowly on the loom using soft alpaca yarn, creating a fabric that is both lightweight and deeply insulating. Alpaca fibre is naturally warm, breathable, and beautifully soft against the skin, making it perfect for colder days.
Each colour block emerges from the rhythm of the loom, giving the cloth a subtle texture and depth that machine-made fabrics simply don’t have.
No two pieces are ever quite the same.
Slow cloth. Natural fibre. Made by hand.
