Even though a lot of our train and road trip across Canada & the US was all about the great outdoors and some stunningly beautiful National Parks, there was also a fair amount of textile and architectural inspiration to admire along the way!

It started right at the end of Retreat with our visit for a tour of

On the opposite side of Canada I snagged some great “local” Canadian milled yarn from p on Vancouver Island (as well as a bit more tea!!)

But along the trail down the US West Coast, I also got to check out

🤩 beautiful interior paintwork and textiles at the Ahwahnee in Yosemite NP

🤩 Kaffe Fassett heaven at Cafe Kevah .bigsur

🤩 gorgeous fabrics and true craft heritage in Portland

🤩 stunning architecture & interiors

If you’re struggling with your knitting mojo right now here are 5 things I would do to try and get fired up again

🔥 Clean your workspace and organise your yarn stash - nothing gets me thinking about all the things I’d love to knit than flicking through all my old books and magazines and seeing all the gorgeous yarn I’ve picked up along the way

🔥 Pick a friend or relative whose birthday is coming up later this year and choose a small, manageable project you could knit to gift to them

🔥 Go through your pile of WIPs and sort them into finish/hold/bin - pull back the yarn from the ones you don’t want to complete anymore and put it back into your stash. Pick one from the finish pile and just “Get it done”

🔥 Get inspiration from a knitting buddy - chat to somebody else about what they have been working on. Sometimes seeing the excitement from them talking about their work lights a tiny fire for you - but beware of comparison-itis!! Don’t beat yourself up that they are doing so much and you are doing nothing. Just listen to how they feel when they talk about their work - this is what you want to capture

🔥 Try a completely different craft or hobby. Sometimes using your creative juices on something else helps to unlock things. I got the idea for my Hebden House Fair Isle pattern when I went on a quilting workshop!

🔥 Go for a walk - sometimes you do just need to step away from your machine and see where your free mind takes you ...

What have I missed? Do you have anything you do when you're trying to get your mojo back??

I’m trying to show up a bit more over the summer - have you noticed?!

But (!!) the MKC isn’t all about me so I wanted to also shout out all the amazing machine knitting designers & tutors who I get to work with through the MKC every year

There is so much I DON’T know about machine knitting. Honestly - does anybody know it all?!?

For a start I’ve only been doing it for 23 years - so I get to learn loads more + get a ton of inspiration from all these guys too 👇

I’ve got so much I want to share from my travels in North America over the Summer! Including this snapshot of all the knitting buddies I got to meet up with whilst I was over there - and this is all on top of the 17 lovely members who I got to spend the week with on Retreat!!

I also caught up with the awesome members of the Burlington Machine Knitters Guild, my machine knitting partner in crime aker on Retreat, my very oldest friend of all time on Vancouver Island, as well as MKC members & pals in Victoria, Portland, San Francisco & Southern California.

I feel truly blessed to have the chance to travel to the other side of the world and be able to spend time chatting about yarn, knitting, machines and more from lovely people who “just get it”!

I thought I’d share a quick photo of the skirt I made for our trip to Canada & the US. I don’t normally share anything here that’s not about machine knitting. But - SHOCK! - machine knitting isn’t everything 😱

I got the gorgeous fabric (cotton/linen) and the Merchant & Mills pattern from when we were up in Edinburgh in April and I earmarked it as a project to make for our trip

Needless to say, I didn’t start it until the week before we were leaving and I was still sewing on the buttons with less than 24 hours to go … but I did it 🙌

And I love it!! It feels great and fits well - even after 6 weeks of travelling. And I get lots of nice comments whenever I wear it. Which is often. Always the sign of a successful project

I’m trying to get back into my sewing groove as it’s nice to have something that doesn’t have to become “work”. So now for my next sewing project which is a cool vintage coat/jacket

I picked up the vintage pattern and an offcut of fabric from when we visited last month and I think it will be a great add to my Autumn wardrobe

I have a sneaky feeling that most machine knitters have at LEAST one other textile related hobby as well - for me it’s hand knitting and sewing. And I’m just starting to embark on embroidery too.

But I know a lot of machine knitters who also spin, dye, weave, crochet … I guess a love of textiles is a love of textiles!

How many yarn/fabric related hobbies do you have?? How many more do you dream about?!

I’ve been over in Canada & the US for the past 6 weeks. At the beginning it was all about prepping for and running our 1st ever Retreat in Canada.

But then after that I had a bit of a chance for some travel, inspiration and time with friends and family.

This pic is from the train trip we took from Toronto all the way over to Vancouver - 4 full days on a train with a break in Jasper for a few days of mountains, lakes and bears!!

The best thing about the train ride was that wifi was virtually non-existent so it was the perfect opportunity to switch off and spend some time on more analog things.

I finally got the chance to finish my embroidery kit from which I’m excited to get framed and up on the bedroom wall. Sometimes it’s great to have some portable (non machine knitting! 😱) projects on the go too.

What are your go-to portable summer projects?

PS - picked that book up at the Huntingdon library back in March and finished in just a couple of days. Really enjoyed it and highly recommend!
