Under the City

It’s been a week since it’s been out in the wild. Nice to share something new and explorative.

Here are some lovely images captured of it Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh. Will be sharing some of the research and ideas soon.

Repost• ‘Earth Matters’ is now open! With over 30 artists in the exhibition, there’s a lot to dig into. To kickstart our ‘work of the week’ posts, today we’re taking a closer look at Stefanie Ying Lin Cheong’s work ‘Under The City’.

An advocate for sustainable craft-making, Stefanie has made this collection of ritual amulets from soil, clay, Scottish rocks and recycled metals. The pieces represent various overlooked elements of urban soils such as lichen, bacteria, earth worms and nematodes, which she personally examined under a microscope. She sees each object as a talisman to protect and renew our relationship with the ground beneath our built environments.

WIP ⚠️ for Under the City

a new piece of work presented as part of Earth Matters that opens in a few days…….stay tuned.

Earth Matters marks 300 years since the birth of James Hutton, the Edinburgh-born farmer and writer who revolutionised our understanding of Earth’s creation and the ground beneath us. Inspired by Hutton and subsequent trailblazers, over 30 artists delve into this living ecosystem to reveal its brilliance, beauty and fragility.

A creative partnership between Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and Susanna Beaumont | Design Exhibition Scotland, Earth Matters is set within Inverleith House Gallery, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.

Soil Science

Been exploring and researching soil as part of Earth Matters curated by opening in a few weeks.

As it’s Science week I thought I would share some of the wonderful experiments and microscopy that the team at lab have helped me explore! So much detail and learning.

Work will be shown very soon! All images are soil collected from Glasgow built environment aka my garden.

Feeling loved, nurtured and uplifted by my wonderful family, friends and community. I really am lucky to have such kind, patient, thoughtful and generous people around me. My heart could actually burst sometimes 💥

Always difficult to know when to share some things but emerging with some positive news that I have been awarded some funding through to continue to research and develop my Geoanthropology project for the next year. The perfect focus for my energy right now. Can’t wait to see what ideas unravel and strange places it takes me to.

Also recently been getting back into the studio after having to move to a temporary space after parts of the roof came in last month during the storms……but happy to be back at the bench.

Spent the last month drawn to looking at the sky……

Been missing hearing and seeing what you have all been upto. Not been able to engage much at all and felt strange not coming on to say anything at the same time.

I miss the community on here so for now I’m gonna tentatively come back on share some skies till I make it back into the studio.

On Pause

I’m afraid I’m having to take some time off. Our family lost my brother very suddenly and I am currently focusing my energy in navigating this tragic loss.

This means I will not be at the Kelvingrove Museum for this weekend as planned.

If you have anything on order then I will be in touch as soon as possible to let you know when I can fulfil.
