National Relaxation Day. 😌

Apparently today is National Relaxation Day. Which sounds like an excellent excuse to do absolutely nothing.

But it also got us thinking about something we've always tried very hard to get right at Bottomley's.

Coming to an opticians shouldn't feel stressful. You shouldn't feel rushed through an eye test. You shouldn't feel awkward trying on glasses while somebody hovers over you. You shouldn't have to make a decision in three minutes because there's someone waiting behind you. And you definitely shouldn't feel pressured into buying something you're not completely happy with.

We like things a little more relaxed than that.

Come in. Sit down. Have a coffee. We'll talk to you properly. Your eye examination gets the time it needs. And when it comes to choosing glasses, we'll bring frames to you, try things you might never have considered and give you an opinion.

Sometimes we'll tell you a frame looks brilliant. Sometimes we'll tell you it really doesn't. 😂

No rush. No pressure. Because choosing something that's going to sit in the middle of your face every day probably deserves a little more thought than we sometimes give it.

So in honour of National Relaxation Day, put your feet up if you can. ....And if you ever come to see us, you can relax too. We've got you.

It's World Lizard Day. 🦎

And, being opticians, we obviously ended up looking at their eyes.

Which, it turns out, are absolutely incredible.

Take the chameleon. Its eyes can move independently of each other, so it can be looking in two different directions at once. When it spots something interesting, both eyes lock onto the same target to judge distance accurately.

Then there are geckos. Some nocturnal geckos have extraordinary low-light vision and can even distinguish colours in conditions where human eyes struggle to see much at all.

And we think our eyes are clever.

The truth is, they are. Your eyes are constantly adjusting focus, adapting to different light levels, judging distance, detecting colour and sending an enormous amount of information back to your brain. Mostly without you giving any of it a second thought.

Until something changes.

Maybe the menu gets held a little further away. Night driving isn't quite as comfortable. Your laptop seems to be making your eyes tired. Or you find yourself reaching for your glasses more often than you used to.

Eyes are remarkable things.

Lizard eyes are just slightly weirder. 🦎😂

Happy World Lizard Day. Here's to looking after the two eyes you've got.

Your eyes don't know you're at work.

They don't know you're answering emails. Or reading spreadsheets. Or switching between your laptop, your phone and the person sat opposite you.

They only know one thing. They've been asked to constantly change focus. Over and over again.

Most people assume that feeling tired, rubbing their eyes or getting a headache is just part of modern life. Sometimes it isn't. Sometimes it's simply because one pair of glasses is trying to do five different jobs.

Distance. Computer. Phone. Paperwork. Meetings.

The right glasses don't just help you see more clearly. They make the whole day feel easier.

And once you've experienced that, it's surprisingly difficult to go back.

When did you last update your glasses — and when did you last update yourself?

Most of us change a lot over five years. Our style evolves, our confidence grows, the way we present ourselves to the world shifts in ways that are sometimes dramatic and sometimes so gradual we barely notice.

And yet the glasses on our face — often the most prominent accessory we wear every single day — can stay exactly the same for a decade or more.

It's not vanity to want frames that reflect who you are now. It's actually quite sensible.

At Bottomley's we see it all the time. Someone comes in after years in the same frames, tries something different with the help of a styling consultant, and gets that slightly startled look of recognition — oh, that's what I actually look like now.

It doesn't have to be dramatic. Sometimes it's a subtle shift in shape, a different colour, a lighter frame. But the right update at the right time can make a genuine difference to how you feel.

If your glasses feel more like a habit than a choice, it might be time for a conversation.

Happy Yorkshire Day. 🤍

Proud to be Yorkshire born and bred.

Yes, we're careful with our money. But what really defines us is this. We're friendly, we tell you the truth and we'll always stop for a chat.

At Bottomley's we're lucky to spend our days looking after people from all over this brilliant county. Some have been coming for generations. Others found us last week.

Not from Yorkshire? You're just as welcome. We'll probably convince you it's the best place in the country before you leave.

Have a wonderful Yorkshire Day, wherever you're celebrating.

"I never thought I'd suit those."

It's probably the sentence we hear most often. "I'd never have picked these..." followed very quickly by "but I absolutely love them."

And I completely understand why.

Left to our own devices, most of us play it safe. We choose what we've always chosen. The same shape, the same colour, the same style. The glasses become a habit rather than a decision.

But the glasses you instinctively reach for aren't always the ones that suit you best. They're often just the ones that feel safest. That's human nature. We all do it. The jumper in the same colour. The same haircut. The same side of the restaurant menu. We naturally gravitate towards what's familiar. But familiar isn't always flattering. Or exciting. Or the best version of you.

One of the nicest parts of our job is gently encouraging someone to try something they would normally walk straight past. Not because it's expensive. Not because it's fashionable. But because we can already picture how good it's going to look.

Then comes the moment we love. They look in the mirror. There's a pause. A smile. And then "I never thought I'd suit those."

That isn't luck. It's what happens when somebody takes the time to understand your face, your colouring, your personality and the impression you want to make.

Nobody ever says "I wish I'd stayed with my old glasses." What they usually say is "I can't believe I've been wearing the wrong style for so long."

Get them right and people won't remember your glasses. They'll remember you.

What if you've simply got used to it?

It's amazing what we can get used to. The squeaky floorboard. The drawer that sticks. The car that pulls slightly to the left. After a while, you stop noticing. Until someone points it out.

Glasses are exactly the same.

We meet people every week who've quietly adapted to things they no longer question. They push their glasses back up every few minutes. They take them off to read. They avoid driving at night. They turn their head instead of moving their eyes. They've accepted that reading menus in dimly lit restaurants is just one of those things. They assume headaches after a day at the computer are normal.

And perhaps the saddest one of all, they've convinced themselves that glasses just don't suit them.

Most people don't complain. Because they don't realise there's another way. If something happens gradually, we adapt. We don't wake up one morning and think these glasses are terrible. It happens so slowly that yesterday feels exactly the same as today.

Until someone asks a different question.

Not "can you read the bottom line?" but "what are you putting up with?"

That's a very different conversation.

Sometimes the answer is nothing, everything's great. Brilliant. That's exactly what we hope to hear.

But every so often someone mentions something they've been living with for years. Something they've never thought to bring up. A few questions later they realise it isn't something they have to put up with after all.

Those are our favourite consultations. Not because someone buys new glasses. Because somebody walks away thinking "I wish I'd done this years ago."

Don't assume that because you've got used to something, it's normal. Sometimes you've simply become very good at adapting. And sometimes all it takes is the right conversation to discover life could have been a little easier all along.

Apparently, 29 July is International Tiger Day.
Naturally, I assumed it was dedicated to the most important Tiger in my life.
My cat, Tiger.
He may be considerably smaller than the endangered variety, but he has beautiful markings, unmistakable style and complete confidence in his appearance.
There’s probably an eyewear lesson in there somewhere.
The best glasses shouldn’t make you look like everybody else. They should bring out the personality and character that are already yours.
Tiger would never settle for ordinary.
Happy International Tiger Day from Bottomley Opticians’ unofficial style consultant.
He works mainly from home, sleeps through most meetings and has yet to sell a single pair of glasses.
But look at him. 🐯

"I thought I was just tired."

It's something we hear surprisingly often. People don't come in saying "my glasses aren't working." Instead they say things like "by the end of the day I'm exhausted" or "I get home and my eyes just feel worn out" or "I thought it was just my age."

And sometimes they're absolutely right. Life is busy, screens are everywhere and work is demanding.

But every now and then we discover something else. Their eyes have simply been working much harder than they need to.

Think about your average day. Emails, phone, laptop, driving, reading, looking across a room, back to your phone. Your eyes are constantly changing focus, hundreds if not thousands of times. If your glasses aren't helping in the way they should, your eyes don't give up. They just work harder. The clever thing is they often do such a good job compensating that you don't realise it's happening. You simply reach the end of the day feeling more tired than you should.

Most people don't immediately blame their glasses. They blame getting older, a busy week, too much screen time, poor sleep. Sometimes that's exactly the reason. Sometimes it isn't.

That's why we spend so much time asking about your day, not just your eyesight. What do you spend hours doing? When do your eyes feel most comfortable? When do they feel at their worst? Those answers often tell us more than reading letters on a chart.

One of the nicest things a client can say to us isn't "I can see another line." It's "I hadn't realised how hard my eyes had been working until they stopped."

Not because we've performed some sort of miracle. Because we've taken away something they thought they simply had to put up with.

Sometimes the biggest improvement isn't seeing more. It's feeling less tired.

The best glasses do two things.

Most people think the job of a good pair of glasses is simple. Help you see. Of course they should. That's the minimum.

But the very best glasses do two things.

You stop noticing you're wearing them. And everyone else notices you.

Think about that for a moment. How many times have you spent the day pushing your glasses back up your nose? Taking them off because they're uncomfortable? Tilting your head to find the right bit of the lens? If you're constantly aware of your glasses, they're demanding your attention. Good glasses shouldn't do that. They should quietly get on with the job while you get on with your day.

But that's only half the story.

Most people don't come to us saying "I wish I could read one more line on the eye chart." What they really want is to look in the mirror and like the person looking back. To feel confident. Approachable. Professional. Like themselves.

We've lost count of the number of people who've looked in the mirror during a styling consultation and said "I'd never have chosen those but I absolutely love them." That's one of our favourite moments. Not because we've found a nice frame. Because we've helped someone see themselves differently. And that's a lovely thing to be part of.

At Bottomley's we're interested in far more than your prescription. We want to know what your days look like, how you use your eyes, what frustrates you and what makes you feel confident. Because when you understand the person first, choosing the right glasses becomes so much easier.

Our aim isn't for people to walk out talking about their glasses. It's for them to walk out feeling more like themselves.

And that's a very different conversation.
