How are freshwater pearls formed?

Pearls are made by marine oysters and freshwater mussels as a

natural defence against an irritant such as a parasite entering their

shell or damage to their fragile body. The oyster or mussel slowly

Fans of cultured pearls take pride in the fact that the oysters are bred in cruelty free environments on pearl farms. However, PETA disagrees because of the process which requires pearl farmers to surgically open oyster shells. They then manually insert some form of irritant inside.

Are pearl designs sustainable jewelry? Many say since pearls are the only gems born from living creatures, they qualify as eco-friendly gems.

A sorting by colour/size sort of day - actually could up end a few days.

Sorted for today's job - graduates from a large center pearl ending in small pearl - a traditional multi or is it three string pearl necklace.

Will be placing a knot between each pearl - so that will be about 204 knots....takes a bit of time placing each knot or am I just old now and everything takes longer.

I am also a bit of a mad stone collector and made a sodalite bracelet for a friend.

His comments:
