This government is clearly in a “defanteh” with the youths, using the police and the courts as tools of intimidation.

Do you remember when the boys were arrested? They were offered bail of D50,000, but they rejected it because they are not criminals.

In response, the police took them to court, where Magistrate Thomas Faud Touray of Badidou Banni decided to send them to Mile 2 Prison.

Later, under public pressure, the court moved the bail hearing forward from September 4 to August 27. But just like the police, the court also set bail at D50,000. It is clear they don’t want the youths to return home and proudly say: “We have won.”

But whether they like it or not, the youths have indeed won. Yesterday, the president established a committee to review PURA’s decision to halt the internet data promotions. That is exactly what the youths demanded, and now it has been granted.

We should all congratulate the youths!

“SO WHO IS PURA PROTECTING?” – BABOUCARR LOUM

Baboucarr Loum has questioned the priorities of The Gambia Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA), asking, “So who is PURA protecting?” as he criticizes high electricity tariffs and calls for affordable internet access for all Gambians.

Full opinion below

Looks like The Gambia Public Utilities Regulatory Authority - PURA is fundraising for the Government. I see no reason why we cannot enjoy internet at affordable prices. Comium has demonstrated that it is possible, even the greedy Africel and Qcell have. So who is PURA protecting?
The ultimate goal of any Government is to provide for the needs of the citizenry, and Gambians want affordable internet of good quality. Lives and businesses are dependent on it. I wish we could start measuring development by the number of people we lift out of poverty and not by the number of kilometers of road we constructed. While we are talking about PURA and the GSM companies, let us not forget the robbery by NAWEC 30% hike in the cost of electricity is outright wicked, and you wonder why the youth are unhappy.
