UNTOLD STORY ABOUT THE SEWING MACHINE
What’s the time estimate that a tailor in our time will take to sew a shirt? 30 minutes, 1 hour...
Then, compare this time it’ll take a tailor now to sew a shirt to the time it’d take Sarah in the 1850s. Sewing took so much time then - It took 14 hours to sew a single shirt in Sarah’s time.
Why this?
In those days nobody had succeeded in inventing a sewing machine that worked very well. That affected not only seamstresses, but wives and daughters who were expected to sew. The consequence made the female gender subjects of a long lasting toil.
There was an interesting man that would love to know about, ISAAC MERRITT SINGER.
Did the name "Singer" ring any bell?
I guess it should, especially for tailors.
Singer was flamboyant, charismatic, capable of great generosity - but he was ruthless too.
He was known to be an habitual womanizer. According to reports, he fathered at least 22 children. For years, he managed to run three families, not all of whom were aware the others existed, and all while technically still married to someone else entirely.
A player indeed!
Singer was, in short, not a natural supporter of women's rights. However, his contribution to the women society was later on amazing.
He considered the prototype sewing machine.
‘In place of the shuttle going round in a circle," he told a workshop owner, ‘I would have it move to and fro in a straight line, and in place of the needle bar pushing a curved needle horizontally, I would have a straight needle moving up and down."
Singer personalized his design, and started to sell his version of the sewing machine. It was very impressive: the first design that really worked. You could make a shirt in just an hour.
What an innovation!
Singer dominated the market, among other manufacturers at the time. It was not just because of the design of his machines, there is more to it. He and his business partner, Edward Clark, were excellent marketers.
Sewing machines, especially Singer sewing machines were expensive, costing several months' income for the average family.
Clark came up with the hire purchase idea, where families could rent the machine for a few dollars a month - and, when their rental payments summed up to actual purchase price, they would own it.
There was something very outstanding about Singer sewing machines then. You’d find it in their advertisement.
‘The buyer of the cheap sewing machine soon pays the difference of price in the constant cost of repairs...’
It’s a long story but the narration already made about it is enough for this post.
I will close this post with a feedback from a woman who owned a Singer sewing machine back then in the 1860.
"I am now able to rest at night, and have time through the day for my family, sewing activities and enjoyments. Is this not a great gain for the world?"
Interesting story, right?
I found it so, and that is why I decided to shared this with you.
The structure of the sewing machine we’ve today was pioneered by Singer.
Singer pioneered the structure of the sewing machines we have today. And as a matter of fact, there are sewing machines today that are better than the Singer ones.
What should one consider first when buying a sewing machine? Price or quality?
