W.I.N Emancipation Message
Today, as we mark Emancipation Day in Guyana, We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) pauses to honour the immense pain, strength, and courage of our African ancestors.
We remember the countless men, women, and children who were ripped from their homeland and forced into slavery stripped of their identity, their dignity, and their freedom. They worked under cruel conditions on plantations across the Caribbean and here in Guyana, building the very foundation of this country with their sweat, blood, and lives.
Emancipation wasn’t a gift. It was won through revolts, resistance, and quiet acts of defiance. From the Berbice Rebellion of 1763 to everyday moments of courage, our ancestors fought to prove their humanity, their worth, and their right to be free.
But freedom didn’t end with emancipation. The wounds of slavery are still with us in inequality, land injustice, poor infrastructure, and limited opportunities for too many in our communities. The fight continues not with chains, but through advocacy, education, and bold action.
At WIN, we believe that true nationhood means facing the truth of our past and choosing to do better together. Building a fair and united Guyana means investing in people in justice, in education, in opportunity, and in healing.
So today, let us honour our ancestors not just with words, but with purpose. Let’s build the kind of Guyana they dreamed of where every person, no matter their background, has a real stake in this country’s future.
May their chains remind us of the road they walked. May their strength live on in all of us. And may we make their freedom real not just in memory, but in action.
Happy Emancipation Day, Guyana.
