Gahcho Kué, the world’s largest new diamond mine, opened on September 20, 2016. It is a fly-in/fly-out remote mine site on the Canadian tundra just south of the Arctic Circle, about 280 km northeast of Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories.

The mine is a joint venture between De Beers Group (51% - the Operator) and Mountain Province Diamonds (49%). Additional resources discovered in 2018 resulted in the life of mine extension to 2030. The open-pit mine will comprise three pits over its current 14-year life of mine. Resource evaluation work continues on a previously unknown kimberlite, Wilson, discovered in 2019. Other brownfield exploration work continues.

The mine uses an ice road during a six- to eight-week period each winter to resupply the site. Trucks bring in key items such as fuel, parts, mining equipment and other non-perishable materials that can be safely shipped in temperatures that routinely drop below -40 degrees Celsius during the 30-hour journey to the site.

Ekati Mine, Canada’s first surface and underground diamond mine is known for producing our premium gem quality diamonds that are world renowned.

Burgundy Diamond Mines owns and operates the Ekati Diamond Mine. Ekati is located in the Lac de Gras region of the Northwest Territories of Canada, approximately 300 km northeast of Yellowknife.

Production at Ekati Diamond Mine began officially in October 1998, following five years of extensive evaluation and development. Exploration programs date back to 1981 and led to the discovery of the Point Lake kimberlite in 1991 and Canada’s greatest staking rush. There are two active mining operations at Ekati, the Sable open pit and the Misery Underground mine. Despite its location in the Canadian sub-arctic, mining activities are conducted year-round.

The Diavik mine is Canada’s largest diamond mine, located on a 20 sq km island in Lac de Gras, Northwest Territories, approximately 300 km from Yellowknife. Access to the mine is by air year-round and by a 425 km ice road in winter that operates for eight to ten weeks between January and March. Four diamond bearing kimberlite pipes are located just off the eastern shore of the island and although the pipes are relatively small, each having surface expressions less than 200m in diameter, they are high grade making Diavik one of the most profitable diamond mines in the world. The majority of Diavik’s products are gem-quality white stones, which are sold to select diamantaires.

Diavik began extracting diamonds in January 2003 and has since produced more than 120 million carats of high quality rough diamonds from the A154 South, A154 North and A418 pipes. Open pit mining from the three pipes has concluded and the ore bodies are currently being mined from underground. Rio Tinto announced the opening of a fourth pipe (A21) in the third quarter of 2018 and the current mine plan has production continuing until 2025. The 2021 Proven and Probable Reserves for Diavik totaled 5.4 Mt grading 2.2 ct/t diamond, based on minimum 1 mm diameter diamond cut-off grade and final re-crushing size of 6 mm.

In 2018, Rio Tinto revealed three of the finest rough diamonds from Diavik. The diamonds are collectively known as The Diavik Stars of the Arctic and include a 177.7 carat diamond, one of the largest and most valuable gem quality rough diamonds ever produced in Canada.

The Premier Mine is an underground diamond mine owned by Petra Diamonds in the town of Cullinan, 40 km east of Pretoria, Gauteng Province, South Africa. Established in 1902, it was renamed the Cullinan Diamond Mine in November 2003 in celebration of its centenary. The mine is a carrot-shaped volcanic pipe and has a surface area of 32 hectares. The mine rose to prominence in 1905, when the Cullinan Diamond – the largest rough diamond of gem quality ever found – was discovered there.

The mine has produced over 750 stones that are greater than 100 carats and more than a quarter of all the world's diamonds that are greater than 400 carats. It is also the only significant source of blue diamonds in the world.

The Cullinan Diamond is the largest rough gem-quality diamond ever found, at 3,106.75 carats. There have been various other notable diamonds that have been recovered from Premier Mine:
The Premier Rose – 353 carats rough
The Niarchos – 426 carats rough
The De Beers Centenary – 275 carats rough
Golden Jubilee Diamond – 755 carats rough
Taylor-Burton Diamond – 69 carats polished

Kao Mining, operated by Storm Mountain Diamonds (Pty) Ltd (SMD), is a prominent diamond mine located in the District of Botha Bothe, Lesotho.

This is the fourth largest kimberlite pipe in Southern Africa - and the largest kimberlite pipe in Lesotho - from a coverage perspective at 19.8 hectares, with an indicated and inferred resource base of 12.7 million carats. Kao’s pipe has been explored and confirmed to a depth of 500m. The mine has approximately 18 years of operation left.

A deposit with exceptional prospects, Kao yields rare coloured diamonds ranging from purple, pink, blue, yellow and top light brown to the classic whites. Globally, ‘fancy coloured’, also known as rare diamonds, are regarded as an exceptional investment. The blues, pinks and the purples tend to be the rarest with the exception of red; the rarest of the rare.

The Kollur Mine, also known as the Guntur District Diamond Mine, is a historic diamond mine located in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is renowned for being one of the world's most productive diamond mines and played a significant role in the diamond trade during the medieval and early modern periods.

The Kollur Mine was in operation for several centuries, with its peak production occurring between the 15th and 19th centuries. It was part of the Golconda Kingdom, which was known for its wealth in diamonds and other precious gems. The diamonds extracted from the Kollur Mine were highly valued and considered some of the finest diamonds in the world.

The mining techniques employed at the Kollur Mine were primarily alluvial mining methods. Miners would extract diamonds from the gravel deposits of the Krishna River, which flows near the mine. The process involved digging pits and sifting through the riverbed deposits to find precious stones.

Several famous diamonds originated from the Kollur Mine, including the Koh-i-Noor, the Hope Diamond, and the Nassak Diamond. These diamonds gained international fame and became part of the crown jewels of various monarchies.

The Catoca diamond mine is located near Saurimo in the Lunda Sul province of Angola. The African diamond mine currently ranks as the world’s fifth biggest diamond mine by reserve. It has an expected mining life of 30 years.

The Catoca kimberlite pipe was discovered by Companhia de Diamantes de Angola (Diamang) in 1965. Artisanal methods of mining were carried out during the exploration. Endiama conducted feasibility studies for the commercial exploitation of the kimberlite during the 1980s.

The Sociedade Mineira de Catoca joint venture was formed in 1994 to build and operate the mine. The first diamonds from the Catoca processing plant were recovered in 1997. The expansion of the processing plant was completed in 2005.

Jwaneng Mine is one of the richest diamond mines in the world, and also the second largest in the world. It is nicknamed "the Prince of Mines", and is located in south-central Botswana about 170 km southwest of the city of Gaborone. The mine became fully operational in August 1982, when it was officially opened by the then President of Botswana, His Excellency Sir Ketumile Masire. Construction of the mine and the township commenced rapidly, the former coming into full production in July 1982.

Jwaneng Mine is the flagship of Debswana due to substantially higher dollar per carat obtained for its gems. Jwaneng Mine contributes about 60-70% of Debswana’s total revenue.

The Argyle Diamond Mine was located in a remote corner of Western Australia’s east Kimberley region, 3,040 km from the state’s capital city, Perth. The rugged beauty of this landscape is a vision in its own right, renowned for its rocky red earth, ancient gorges and distinctive flora and fauna.

The Argyle Diamond Mine remains one of history’s most important diamond discoveries. From the commencement of production in 1983, the mine enthralled the world by producing diamonds with a depth, range and intensity of color never seen before or since. While operating, the Argyle Diamond Mine produced more than 90% of the world’s supply of rare pink diamonds; yet less than 1% of the mine’s total production was pink.

Unearthing diamonds from the vastly remote Western Australian terrain was a challenge both in size and complexity. Established using alluvial mining methods, the Argyle Diamond Mine transitioned to an open pit mine in 1985, subsequently moving underground in 2013 in order to access diamonds resting more than 0.5 km beneath the Earth’s surface.

Although the Argyle Diamond Mine celebrated its final day of mining on 3 November 2020, Argyle Pink Diamonds™ continues to carefully place the last of the mine’s precious cache of rare diamonds, and perform our role as custodian of the precious legacy of Australia’s finest luxury export.

The Moussaieff Red Diamond is the world’s largest red diamond. The 13.9-carat rough was discovered by a Brazilian farmer in 1989 and sold to William Goldberg Diamond Corp., which cut it into a 5.11-carat vivid red trilliant, naming it the Red Shield as a result. It was purchased by Moussaieff Jewellers around 2002 and renamed the Moussaieff Red, before being displayed at the Smithsonian in 2003.

The Darya-i-Noor, meaning ‘Sea of Light’ in Arabic, is one of the largest pink diamonds in the world. Displaying a pale pink hue, it weighs 175 - 195 carats - though the mounting makes ascertaining an exact weight impossible. Part of the Iranian crown jewels, one of its pavilion facets is inscribed in Persian: ‘The Sultan, Shahib Qiram, Fath Ali Shah, Qajar 1250 [1834]’. It was pillaged from Delhi, India in 1739 and is currently in the vaults of the Central Bank of Iran in Tehran.

The Nur-ul-ain (Noor-ul-ain) is a brilliant-cut oval diamond of around 60 carats. Its name means “light of the eye” in Persian and Arabic.

Discovered at Golconda in India during the 17th century, it is fancy pink in color and one of the largest diamonds of its kind.
Together with the even larger Darya-i-Noor diamond, it is considered one of the two most-celebrated gems among the Iranian crown jewels, where it remains to this day.

The Nur-ul-ain is the centerpiece of an exquisite Harry Winston tiara created in 1958 for the Empress Farah's wedding to the last Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi.

Since the Nur-ul-ain disappeared into Iran, authorities have declined to release any information concerning its weight and measurements.

25/03/2024

The Allnatt Diamond is a diamond measuring 101.29 carats (20.258 g) with a cushion cut, rated in color as Fancy Vivid Yellow by the Gemological Institute of America. This diamond was named after one of its holders, Major Alfred Ernest Allnatt, a soldier, sportsman, art patron and benefactor.

The Allnatt's origins are unknown prior to Major Allnatt's purchasing of the diamond in the early 1950s. After purchasing the diamond, he commissioned Cartier to make a setting for it. The final setting was a platinum flower with five petals, a stem and two leaves, all set with diamonds. The Allnatt was resold at auction in May 1996 by Christie's in Geneva for $3,043,496 US. At the time of its sale the Allnatt was 102.07 carats (20.414 g). and was graded Fancy Intense Yellow. After being sold to the SIBA Corporation, the diamond was re-cut to its current weight and the intensity was upgraded as a result.

The Allnatt was displayed as part of the Smithsonian's "The Splendor of Diamonds" exhibit, alongside The De Beers Millennium Star and The Heart of Eternity.

24/03/2024

This cushion cut diamond weighing 10.73 carats is not famous for its weight or its quality, but simply due to its discovery ! It was, in fact, the first diamond to have been found in South Africa.

In 1867, a young boy called Erasmus Jacobs found a pretty stone on the banks of the River Orange. Unaware of the nature of this stone, he used it to play jacks.

Later, he gave the diamond to his neighbor, a farmer called Schalk van Niekerk, who collected minerals. Intrigued by the stone, he decided to entrust it to John O'Reilly, a traveling salesman. He took it for himself and sent it to the geologist G. Atherstone, who, at that time, was one of the few people to have knowledge of diamond gems in this region.

He concluded that it was a Brownish Yellow diamond weighing 21.25 carats. The Eureka was then sold to Sir Philip Wodehouse for the sum of £1,500. The diamond was exhibited in 1889 at the universal exposition in Paris. It was only later that it was cut into the stone that we now know.

In 1966, the president of De Beers bought the diamond on behalf of his company.

The Tiffany Diamond is one of the largest yellow diamonds ever discovered. Its weight was originally 287.42 carats when discovered in 1878 at the Kimberley Mine in South Africa. It was purchased by Tiffany & Co. founder Charles Lewis Tiffany and cut by George Frederick Kunz to its present size of 128.54 carats. It has been worn by just four women: socialite E. Sheldon Whitehouse, actress Audrey Hepburn, entertainer Lady Gaga, and actress Gal Gadot, who will sport it in the upcoming film Death On The Nile.

19/03/2024

The Golden Jubilee is currently the largest faceted diamond in the world. Since 1908, Cullinan I, also known as the Great Star of Africa, had held the title, which changed following the 1985 discovery of a large brown diamond of 755 carats (151 g) in the prolific blue ground of the Premier mine in South Africa; the diamond would later be cut with an as-of today unsurpassed weight of 545.67 carats (109.13 g).

The Premier mine was also the origin of the Cullinan diamonds in 1905, as well as other notables such as the Taylor-Burton in 1966 and the Centenary in 1986.

The "Unnamed Brown", as the Golden Jubilee was first known, was considered something of an ugly duckling by most. It was given to Gabriel Arellano (DCW) by De Beers for the purpose of testing special tools and cutting methods which had been developed for intended use on the flawless D-color ("colorless") Centenary.

18/03/2024

The 41-carat Dresden Green is perhaps the oldest recorded green diamond, having been described in a London newspaper in 1722. Diamond merchant Marcus Moses was noted as having sourced the stone from India and presented it to King George I of Great Britain.

Like the Hope Diamond, it is believed to have originated from the Kollur Mine in Golconda. It was acquired by August III of Poland in 1742 and was later set alongside two white diamonds in a hat ornament. It was kept at August’s seat, Dresden Castle in northern Germany, until its destruction during World War II. Today, it is in the Green Vaults of the Albertinum Museum, which was built atop the ruins of the castle.

17/03/2024

The diamond seems to have originated in the Central African Republic and the rough stone is known to have weighed 11.27 carats. The diamond is presently owned by the Cora Diamond Corporation of New York. Besides the above facts, other relevant information such as the mine of origin, the date of discovery, the circumstances relating to the discovery, The original owner of the diamond, the person or company involved in the cutting etc. are conspicuously lacking. Even details of how the Cora Diamond Corporation came to own the diamond are not not available.

The only details available about the diamond are the features of the finished diamond as certified by the Gemological Institute of America. The deep bluish green color is an extremely rare color among diamonds and perhaps this may be the only naturally colored diamond on record having this unique color. Thus in spite of its relatively small size of 5.51 carats, compared to other famous diamonds, the Ocean Dream earns the distinction of being one of the rarest diamonds in the world. Artificial color enhancement by irradiation may sometimes impart this unique color to diamonds; even a qualified Gemologist with a well trained eye may sometimes presume the Ocean Dream to be artificially colored, at first sight.

In our long list of famous diamonds the only other famous green diamond we have come across is the 40.70-carat Dresden Green diamond, which is a historical diamond of Indian origin. This gives an indication of the extreme rarity of green color in diamonds. The De Beers collection of fancy colored natural diamonds contain some rare specimens of natural green diamonds.

The Blue Heart weighs 30.62 carats and has a rare, deep blue color. The Parisian firm Atanik Ekyanan of Neuilly cut it into a heart shape in 1909 or 1910, and this date raises the issue of whether the rough stone came from Africa or from India. In 1910 Cartier purchased the diamond and sold it to an Argentinean woman named Mrs. Unzue. At the time, it was set in a lily-of-the-valley corsage and remained so until Van Cleef & Arpels bought the gem in 1953. They exhibited it set in a pendant to a necklace valued at $300,000 and sold it to a European titled family. In 1959 Harry Winston acquired the gem, selling it five years later, mounted in a ring, to Marjorie Merriweather Post. Mrs. Post donated the Blue Heart to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C., where it remains to this day.

The most famous blue diamond in history is the 45-carat Hope Diamond. In 2005, analysis revealed that the Hope Diamond was in fact cut from the stolen French Blue. It is likely the stone was recut to disguise its identity and was smuggled to London in the early 19th Century.

In 1839, it was referenced as part of the gem collection of Henry Philip Hope, part of the Hope banking family, after which it is named. The diamond was inherited and sold numerous times over the following decades, and was owned by both Pierre Cartier and Harry Winston. Winston donated it to the Smithsonian museum in 1958, where it is still displayed today.

The Tavernier Blue is believed to be the first blue diamond recorded. It was sourced by French gem dealer Jean-Baptiste Tavernier during his travels in India in 1666, and is believed to originate from the Kollur Mine in Golconda. Weighing approximately 115 carats, Tavernier described its colour as ‘violet’ and sold it to King Louis XIV, the Sun King. Jean Pitau, jeweller to the French court, recut the stone into the 69-carat French Blue. It was later set into a pendant alongside red spinel and painted white diamonds, before being stolen around 1792, during the French Revolution.

Recent auction record-breaker:

2015: The Sweet Josephine | $US28.5 million
Weighing 16.08 carats, an unnamed fancy vivid pink diamond was sold to Hong Kong billionaire Joseph Lau for a then-record price. Lau renamed it in honour of his daughter.

2017: The Pink Star | $US71.2 million
A 59.60-carat fancy vivid pink – was sold for $US71.2 million to Chow Tai F**k.

2020: The Spirit of the Rose | $US26.6 million
The 14.83-carat fancy vivid purplish-pink, mined by Alrosa in Russia, was sold for $US26.6 million to an anonymous phone bidder.

Since 2005, there has been a 11% CAGR all across pink diamonds, and a total appreciation of nearly 370%. Even a mid-range pink can attract 20 times higher prices per carat than white diamonds. The stronger the hue and the bigger the stone, the bigger the multiplier.

Since 2000, Argyle pink diamonds have had a total appreciation of over 500%. Red diamonds are so rare that it is impossible to calculate an increase in value.

’Where is the color generally found?

Pink diamonds are only found in a few mines across the world, making them extremely rare. India and Brazil were notable sources in the 17th and 18th Centuries. Today, the Argyle Mine in Western Australia supplies 90-95 per cent of the world’s pink diamonds, with Russia, Indonesia, and several African countries also producing some pinks.

What makes it PINK?

Pink diamonds are formed when the unique heat and pressure inside the Earth causes the diamond’s carbon crystal lattice to distort.

This distortion, also known as plastic deformation, imparts the pink color.

Rarity: Pink diamonds represent 0.5-1% of all fancy color diamonds. Red diamonds are so rare that no pure reds were submitted for grading at the Gemological Institute of America between 1957 and 1987.
Shades Available: For pink and red diamonds, undertones may be purple, brown or orange.
