What’s On Our Radar? 💥 | Beyond the Burp: Acting on Methane Emissions (Part 1)

Did you know the top-emitting foods at your grocery store have more than TWICE the emissions of the runner-up? 🛒

It’s easy to point fingers, but the science behind it might surprise you. It all comes down to a natural biological process—and a massive global footprint of 16 million tons of CO2 equivalent every single year. In Part 1, our In-house Scientist, Jacob, breaks down the gut science behind red meat and dairy—and why a solution might be hiding in plain sight.

So, how do we fix it without completely changing what’s on our plates? Stay tuned for Part 2!

🌍We are thrilled to see our partnership with DFI Retail Group featured in Capital HK! The article spotlights the inaugural DFI Sustainability Innovation Challenge and underscores our shared mission to drive a low-carbon transition across global food supply chains.🐄

At The Mills Fabrica, we have spent over eight years investing in and nurturing early-stage innovations. But breakthrough technologies can only change the planet if they have a clear runway to commercial market adoption. That is exactly what this collaboration aims to achieve.

As our General Manager & Head of Asia, Cintia Nunes, notes in the feature, our value lies "not only in discovering game-changing technologies but in acting as a strategic ecosystem platform." This challenge does something crucial: it connects cutting-edge agrifood tech with actual retail supply chains, giving ready-to-go climate innovations a real-world launchpad.

Huge congratulations again to the challenge winner, Australia-based Number 8 Bio, whose innovative livestock feed additive (BetterFeed™️) reduces methane emissions while boosting farm productivity. ✨

The Mills Fabrica is delighted to celebrate an exciting milestone from our investment portfolio:

Nukoko, UK-based startup pioneering cocoa-free chocolate ingredients through fava bean fermentation, has been acquired by global ingredients company Döhler to expand its cocoa-free chocolate solutions portfolio. 🍫 This marks a major step for the alternative cocoa sector, as the food industry grapples with the challenges facing the cocoa supply chain.

Since first investing in Nukoko’s seed round in 2024 alongside SOSV and Oyster Bay Venture Capital, we have been proud to support its science-driven approach to reimagining chocolate and advancing a more sustainable future of food. As Nukoko begins its next chapter with Döhler, we look forward to seeing its impact scale globally. 🌏

Transforming a disruptive, early-stage idea into a lasting, scalable reality requires far more than just financial backing. It takes a dedicated ecosystem of structured incubation, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and hands-on mentorship.

This was a key takeaway from the panel discussion, "Scouting Promise: Identifying, Investing, Incubating the Next Big Idea," where our General Manager, Cintia Nunes, recently shared her insights at the festival.

Alongside brilliant panellists Lillian LI and Samuel Sun-Yiu Lee, and moderated by Vincent Siu, the session explored these ecosystem dynamics through the lens of interactive media and gaming for social impact. It was an inspiring discussion on how different industries assess viability and support experimental, meaningful projects in rapidly evolving sectors.

A huge thank you to the team at Games for Change Hong Kong for hosting such a stellar and necessary dialogue! 🌿💡

Last Friday, on World Environment Day, we joined forces with DFI Retail Group to prize the winner of our global search to decarbonise beef and dairy supply chains. Huge congratulations to Number 8 bio ! 🌍✨

Their innovative feed additive, BetterFeed™, eliminates methane emissions from livestock while boosting animal productivity—turning lost energy into farmer profitability and environmental impact.

As our General Manager, Head of Asia, Cintia Nunes, shared: "The next phase of climate innovation is not just about discovering new technologies but helping them scale in ways that create tangible change." Alongside a HK$120,000 grant, the team also won the invaluable opportunity to pilot and scale their solution across DFI’s extensive supply network.

Thank you to all 40+ global applicants, our expert judging panel, and our phenomenal finalists Provectus Algae, AbacusBio, eVerse.AI and KINAVA for pushing the boundaries of agrifood tech.
