How do natural and regenerated cellulosic materials behave in different environmental conditions?

An independent study by HYDRA Marine Sciences tested cellulosic fibers across 177 specific scenarios, covering laboratory, mesocosm, and natural environments. The result?

Lyocell, modal and viscose biodegrade comparably to natural cellulose – in soil, freshwater, and marine environments alike.

“At a time when microplastic pollution and persistent waste are major concerns, these findings provide an important scientific foundation for more sustainable material choices.” Michaela Kogler - Lenzing Group, Project Manager Filament.

Water issues in the fashion industry are often invisible to consumers, yet they are a major driver of environmental impact.

In conversation with , Krishna Manda, Global Head of Sustainability at our parent company Lenzing, reflects on four decades of water stewardship: a once-muddy river that now runs clear behind our Austrian mill to dope-dyed fibers that skip conventional dyeing altogether.

Fashion Revolution Japan just published “Fashion and Water” – a new booklet examining the relationship between clothing and water use.

Brazilian designer Flavia Ar**ha operates more like a research laboratory than a traditional fashion house. She works closely with local communities and traditional craftspeople across Brazil to help preserve cultural heritage.

In her latest collection "Floresta”, she translates the forest not as a pattern or a print, but as a living system: movement, structure, drape, texture. TENCEL™ fibers, made from wood sourced from responsibly managed forests, brought that vision to life in the fabric itself.

19 styles divided into three lines, crafted with Textil Carmem fabrics made with TENCEL™ fibers.

Available starting May 26 at the brand’s physical stores and online – explore the full collection here: https://www.flaviaaranha.com/floresta

Our approach to biodiversity goes beyond responsible sourcing practices and the textile value chain.

We’d like to share 7 concrete initiatives from the chapter “Biodiversity & Ecosystems” from our 2025 Sustainability Report.

We use the AR3T framework (A Avoid, R Reduce, R Restore, R Regenerate, T Transform) as a practical classification tool to present our actions in relation to biodiversity and ecosystems.
