Top Gun: Maverick - 2022

Who said you can't have the same '90s magic recreated and milked at the box office? Top Gun: Maverick is a brilliant example of using the same formula and just adding a better action sequence and a very catchy song can earn you a billion dollars and get Hollywood the jolt they awaited after the dull run in 2022. For movies in Bollywood and Hollywood had a very bad year with the boycott and poor content but Top Gun: Maverick did exceedingly well. The movie was also nominated for best movie and best VFX and animation category at the Oscars 2023. The movie stars Tom Crusie, John Hamm, Miles Teller, Collin Powell, Val Kilmer and, Jennifer Collenly. The movie is directed by Joseph Kosinski.

The movie starts with an experimental project run by Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell(Tom Cruise) who tests the speed of an aircraft to Mach 10. The project is about to be cancelled by his superior but Maverick always has a record of breaking rules and not following orders. Maverick pushes the limits of the aircraft to Mach 11 which destroys the vehicle. He gets assigned to Top Gun School again and has a new mission to train the students and get them ready before the clock runs out. The nostalgia created between him and Penny(Jennifer Collenly) his love interest from the previous movie, who was also his teacher in his time in Top Gun as a student. But problems are created when his best friend, his buddy Goose's son Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw (Miles Teller) is also assigned the same mission. His troubles do not get better but worse since the parameters for the mission are either impossible or deadly. His VA Beau "Cyclone" Simpson(John Hamm) keeps making sure that Maverick is in check does not make it easier. Catch music from One Republic and Beach football with Hunky Navy Pilots is probably too cliche but it works. To see if Maverick and his students can accomplish the mission against terrorists you have to see the movie.

The movie uses the same formula used in the last movie. There is no change in the story at all since it works with the audience. The same impossible task, dog fights in aircraft, a stud and a good guy fight, never-ending love interest, last minute save, a sacrifice in name of friendship. The VFX and the stunts performed in the movie are really good. If you watch the movie on IMAX it was truly amazing and with the background sound, it felt you are the pilot of the movie. The movie did get a lot of attention and love since everyone loves the 90's movies and the nostalgia of living your youth again. Tom Cruise is a very talented action star and he does an amazing job of creating a good action movie. If you want to relive your days of the 90s when Walkman was your friend and Coca-Cola was considered healthy.

Vikram - 2022

The third biggest Tamil blockbuster of the year 2022, and come back for veteran actor Kamal Hassan. The movie is directed by visionary director Lokesh Kanagaraj. His works include Kaithi, Vijay the Master, Aviyal and his upcoming project is Leo. He has created his cinematic universe called Lokesh Cinematic Universe which currently includes movies Kaithi, Vikram and, if speculations are correct next movie Leo. This movie collected almost 500-600 crore. This movie is currently on my top for favourite movies.

The movie starts with Karanan(Kamal Hassan) who is a drunk and reckless person. He gets involved with the wrong people which gets him killed in the first few minutes of the movie. This starts a suspicious investigation of the murder by a black squad commander Agent Amar(Fahhad Faasil). He investigates the murder of Karanan and the reason why would someone kill an innocent citizen. This is one thread of the spider's web. The investigation keeps going deeper and deeper and involves a drug mafia lord Santhanam(Vijay Sethupathi). Santhanam is a ju**ie, a ruthless, angry but lovable villain. He has three wives in this economy and his whole family of 50 cousins helps him run the drug mafia. The connection between Santhanam and Karanan is the biggest spoiler and you need to watch Kaithi. The movie does reveal that Karanan was the commander of the pilot batch of Black Squad and his name is Agent Vikram. The film is a great piece of cinema work and even compare to the mafia movies made by Quinton Tarantino and Martin Socresses.

The movie is an excellent way of telling Bollywood writers that original content can always win hearts. It might be a long movie but there is not a minute you feel that you are bored. The suspense and story are too good and the before the interval sequence is breathtaking. But the best part is where most people leave is the mid-credit scene. I have to spoil this for everyone but Rolex(Suriya) is introduced as the big kingpin of the drug mafia. That entrance and the music by Anirudh and the direction for the last 10 mins change the whole world built by Lokesh Kanagaraj. So I believe it is a must-watch movie for everyone who likes action, thriller, good music, adores Kamal Hassan, have a love for films.

Tu Jhooti Main Makkaar - 2023

The film is helmed by Luv Ranjan famous for directing Pyaar Ka Punchnama 1 and 2, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. His area of expertise is showing relationships and reality revolving around relationships. There is no action or big blasts in the movie or suspense, just cheesy comedy and Bollywood romance which is not reality. The movie stars Ranbir Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Anubhav Singh Bassi, Dimple Kapadia and Boney Kapoor. The movie includes everything family, romance, drama and, a lot of cheesy comedy and, don't miss the crappy music.

Rohan "Mickey" Arora(Ranbir Kapoor) is a spoiled upper-middle-class south delhi boy. He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth but values his family and one friend Manu Dabbas. He has his hand in a number of businesses making my jack of everything. But his specialty comes in helping people break up without guilt. That's the first red flag about our protagonist. He gets hired by his own best friend to help him break up with his fiancé. Unfortunately, Mickey falls in love with bridesmaid Nisha "Tinni" Malhotra(Shraddha Kapoor) a corporate, middle-class and very good-looking Delhi girl. They meet and flirt and that's the best part of the movie the over-acting somehow works because it's so cheesy and fun. The biggest revelation undergoes during the interval since Tinni hires Mickey to help her break up with her fiancé. The movie does not end there the second interval is probably the better half of the movie. It's filled with laughter, emotions and a tragically good ending which our Director is not known for.

It could be the crappy theatre I watched the movie, but did the director spend the whole music budget on two songs? The rest of the songs were pure torture and unnecessary. There is a very big reason why the main characters should not break up in the middle of the movie, it adds more time for the screen to see them patch up. That could be the only reason why the audience will not enjoy it as much as any other movie. But overall the movie did justice to the romantic-comedy genre. Both Ranbir and Shraddha are doing amazing in the movie, they are connecting romantically, physically and collectively. The first half of the movie did feel a bit uncooked and recently Ranbir gave a statement "We shot the movie for 180 days without a script" which can be seen. There was no moral established till the very end it just pops up and suddenly it's converted into a family movie. This can be seen as a girl you love v/s family you love sort of drama movie.

Cirkus - 2023

The much-awaited movie from Rohit Shetty an Indian Film-Maker who has directed Golmaal Franchise and built the cop universe. He is a very good director and makes funny and action movies. The new movie is adapted from The comedy of errors. It was well-awaited since the last movie was Sooryavanshi which was a blockbuster hit at the Indian box office. The movie has a big star cast and the leading cast included Ranveer Singh, Varun Sharma, Pooja Hedge and Jacqueline Fernandez. The movie can be a soft reboot of Angoor starring Sanjeev Kumar and Deven Sharma.

The 60’s era was created to build the movie and the locations selected for the movie were amazing. The colour theme and background score for the movie do make you go back to that era. The premise of the movie is made in a way where there is bound to be confusion. Two sets of twins when interchanged and named the same name Roy and Joy show how much the writers were paying attention to the story. The story lacks comedy, structure and plot but it is based on plain confusion. The movie had no action but slap-stick comedy or brainless comedy.

This is the first movie with Ranveer Singh in a double role and Varun Sharma in a double role. They did try to do a good job and even tried to show the difference in the personalities of the twins. But you cannot learn comic timing and in this movie, the comedy was just not the right fit. In past, we all have seen Chennai Express and All The Best which are all-time comedy movie that fills a room with laughter with every watch. But Cirkus was probably a bad release, especially for Christmas time when holidays and spirits are high but the movie failed to keep those feelings up.

The movie is not a must-watch but if you want something to binge on Netflix and just want to watch a bad version of Angoor then you have the perfect movie to watch Cirkus. If you are planning to get high and want something in the background then it does feel funny once you are drunk. Just requesting Mr. Shetty and Mr. Singh to pull it together and make something that would break all box-office collections and is funny. You have a star cast that can do anything please use them properly.

Ant-man and The Wasp: Quantumania

The movie’s trailer showed a lot of promise from the director Peyton Reed. Ant-man and Ant-man and the wasp were also directed by the same director. Both Ant-man movies were designed to be a refresher for the pallet in Marvel Cinematic Universe. The first Ant-man came after Avengers: Age of Ultron which was a stand-alone origin movie ending PHASE 2, the second movie also came after Avengers: Infinity War. But this time the game plan changed according to Kevin Feige. He gave chance to the underdog of The Avengers team which jump-starts PHASE 5 with Ant-man and The Wasp: Quantumania. The movie began like a marvel movie continuing the stories from the last 30 movies and 8 shows set in MCU. The more important part is focusing on BLIP where half the population was gone and came back after 5 years. The universe is still coping with the consequences of Endgame and, now since we saw in Doctor Strange in Multiverse and Spider-Man: No Way Home alternate universes exist and they exist in Marvel.

In the Infinity Saga, we say that jumping in timelines can cause a ripple effect and the Quantum realm was just introduced to help Avengers against Thanos. The next saga is the Multi-verse saga which gives us a big hint that we will be seeing a lot of multi-versal activity in the next few movies and TV shows. This movie was also big on multiverse since it introduced the next big Villain for the broken-up and retired Avengers team. Kang The Conqueror defeats universes and branched realities to maintain the balance among multi-verse. He is from a very far future and has a Time Chair which can not only work through time but also different realities and universes. Ultimately he is a very powerful and next-level threat the Avengers might not be ready for.

The VFX team has worked very hard on the movie and it shows. The quantum realm is filled with odd-shaped creatures and dialects. There is some sort of Star Wars rebellion living in that realm who are hiding from Kang since he is ruthlessly brutal. Ant-man might have taken a bigger issue than a usual heist or an enemy from the past(I meant Ghost from Ant-man and The Wasp). Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lily as Ant-man and The Wasp did an amazing job and Michael Douglas is the real G.O.A.T of the movie. Kathryn Newton as Cassie Lang is a very good casting decision. Jonathan Majors is also doing a very good job as Kang and his infinite variants. The best part is all his variants are different personalities and he is doing an amazing job being the bad guy. There are a few surprises on the way like the much-awaited M.O.D.O.K. The big henchmen from Marvel comics are finally introduced and it was a great surprise.

The movie might have been setting something big but lacks in lustre and laughter that we expect from Ant-Man. Micheal Peña is missing as Luis and the whole heist gang were missing from the third part. They might not have superpowers or super-suits but they are the entourage that keeps the Ant-man franchise light and funny. The story build-up was good and the suspense around Kang is a good way to introduce him. Marvel cinematic does an amazing job with story connection and filling up fillers like Michelle Pfieffer as the original Wasp stuck in the quantum realm. But the way they tried to copy Thor: Ragnarok approach to introduce new characters and build Thor’s image again. That quite did not work for this Ant-man movie. It is marvel fatigue continuing to grow and it will only end once we get something worthy enough after Avengers: Endgame. I am a big marvel fan and I am hoping soon the writing team or story team will catch up with the fatigue and end it with good content. You should watch the movie in the theatre since it is a good follow-up but not a worthy movie and obviously please do watch the post-credit scenes. There are two of them and worth the wait. If you are a true Marvel fan you should never leave before the end credit scene.

As a movie lover, I never thought it could exhaust me to a level where I was counting the minutes till the movie ends. There is no actual story that we can take meaning out of it. There was no comedic joke that I enjoyed while watching the movie. The puns and comedy timing There was no sense of why this movie is made. If it is based on the concept of adopting parents from an old age home and claiming insurance who thought that? Did everyone else feel the same in the theatres or did Punjabi movies have stooped to this level? Why did producers think they should finance this movie?

I have seen very good Punjabi movies and some of them are acted by Diljeet himself. Diljeet has proven himself as an entertainer and a very good singer. I am a writer as well as a bathroom singer and usually grove to Diljeet’s tunes. I still laugh when I have watched Jatt and Juliette which includes both parts. Sardar Ji is a classic film where you can see Diljeet’s swag and attitude and, his chemistry with both his co-stars is absolutely perfect. His recent movie Jogi released on Netflix was his way to show his exuberant acting skills.

But Babe Bhangra Paunde Ne failed on multiple levels with a lot of things. They made a comedy movie without any comedy in it. Sargun Mehta does a good job as the love interest in the movie but her role could have been more meaty role. They made a movie with a concrete storyline or even a message. The movie is a big mess and it falls upon are lead Diljeet who tries to pull the movie together. The writer Naresh Kathooria has proven that people will watch Punjabi movies with an utter nonsense story. The first half of the film is all gags and stupid get rich quick scheme and the second half somehow pulls an Ocean eleven heist with bunch of oldies looking like Expendables. Diljeet and his oldies are tasked to steal the queen’s crown. It does make us feel if you are running in a competition alone it is obvious you will win. So BBPN is a perfect example that if there is no competition or it will perform very well. Please do not waste your time in this mindless and lifeless movie since the makers are making a sequel. So hopefully the sequel is better than the original.
