💡 Did you know your taste buds aren’t fixed?

One of the biggest myths in nutrition is that people are simply “picky eaters.”
In reality, our taste preferences are incredibly adaptable.

Research suggests that:
🧒 Children may need 10-15, or even more exposures to a new food before willingly accepting it.
🥗 Foods we encounter repeatedly become familiar, and familiarity can increase acceptance.
😋 Positive experiences around food may be just as important as the food itself.

I have a friend who refused to eat green beans for more than 30 years because of a childhood cafeteria incident. Her teacher told her she couldn’t leave the table until every bean was gone, so she quietly stuffed them into the pockets of her winter coat. She forgot about them until several days later, when the family dog began following her coat around the house like it was a mobile buffet. To this day, she says green beans smell like “fear, wet wool, and third-grade betrayal.”

Another friend believed he hated tomatoes because his grandmother served them warm, peeled, and floating in a mysterious bowl of liquid every Sunday. He called them “wet eyeballs” and once launched one across the dining room with a spoon straight into his grandfather’s face. Years later, he tried a fresh garden tomato with basil and discovered he didn’t hate tomatoes at all. He hated whatever crime had been committed against them in that bowl.

Food memories are powerful.
Sometimes we don’t hate a food.
We hate the way someone cooked it in 1987.
We don’t just eat with our mouths.
We eat with our memories, emotions, culture, and experiences.
That means every healthy meal, every fun cooking activity, every colorful plate, and every positive conversation about nutrition can help shape future eating habits.

Instead of asking:
🥦 “How do I get my child to eat broccoli?”
Ask:
🥦 “How do I make broccoli part of a positive memory?”

Healthy eating isn’t about perfection.
It’s about creating thousands of small moments that teach our brains to enjoy nourishing foods.
One bite.
One smile.
One memory at a time.
