Social connection is the key to positive mental health 🧠❤️

After 15 years of unexpressed emotions and mental health struggles I created a clothing brand called HUH, meaning how’s ur head?

Now I tour schools and businesses speaking about my journey, my struggles and my business in an effort to normalise and make our struggles relatable to all.

Over the years, and particularly in my teenage years into my early 20’s I constantly struggled with body image. I was always self conscious and it affected me every single day. It determined how I felt, my confidence levels & my ability to perform in sport. It decided what I would wear, how I would act and oftentimes made me stay at home when I wanted to be out and about socialising and having fun. I would wear baggier black clothes because I had heard once that black clothing makes you look slimmer. I would never wear a t-shirt underneath a hoodie as my brain was telling me the extra layer was making me look even bigger and I would always sit with a pillow on my lap to cover myself to try hide what I was “ashamed” off. I would be lying if I said it didn’t affect me to this day. It most certainly does but thankfully not to the same extent.

Over the years my relationship to food and exercise has always been tricky, I struggled with severe OCD for years and one ritual/routine of it meant I ate the same meals and foods for months and months at a time and if something changed that or got in the way of it things would not be good for me mentally. I went through phases of extreme healthiness and extreme unhealthiness when it came to food choices and now looking back on it, the extremes highlight the obsessive compulsive disorder I experienced.

In 2024 I ran 6 marathons, 40+ half marathons and not a day would pass where I didn’t do some form of exercise. Although exercise is my anchor, it clears my head and it’s incredible for your mental health there have been times just like in 2024 where it both made me the strong person I am today but but also broke me down.

I’m yet to figure it all out (obviously) but as I grow older and after years of therapy I am in a much healthier place with body image, my relationship with food and exercise. I needed somebody to tell me sooner what I now know, I needed the arm around the shoulder and the listening ear. I needed therapy and I needed more mental health role models when I was younger. A problem shared is a problem halved.

It’s been one hell of a journey but in a weird way I wouldn’t change a bit of it. All the hardship, struggles, panic attacks, sleepless nights and much much more has given me the opportunity to share my story in the hopes that somebody feels less isolated. Mental health is health, and we need to be educated on it from a young age, we need to address it as we get older and we need to create environments where we can openly discuss our struggles.

If you need a guest speaker for your business, school or sports club to talk all things mental health and wellbeing-being let’s work together!

HUH X DF - TOMORROW @ 7PM ❤️🧠

Tomorrow at 7pm ourselves here at HUH Clothing are partnering with the incredibly talented Daragh Fleming to release some oversized, unisex and organic t-shirts featuring some of his work printed on the back. Daragh has been a friend of the brand for many years and has advocated for HUH near and far representing our products on Tv appearances, newspaper articles, throughout all social media platforms and even on stage at festivals. The brands align, our goals for mental health awareness are in sync and ever since getting to know Daragh several years ago I always thought it would be a great fit.

These t-shirts will be available on a pre-order basis with all information included in the product descriptions and emails being sent out to all newsletter sign ups.

Another set of mental health awareness jerseys ready to be worn! A massive shoutout and thank you goes out to St Paul’s national school in Ratoath County Meath for this order. This is hopefully going to be the first of many national schools we will be supplying as having the mental health message on the front, the back and the sleeves of these jerseys will have the students questioning what it is, why it’s there and what it means resulting in mental health conversations, mental health awareness and mental health advocacy from such a young age.

When I was in national school I didn’t even know what mental health was, and now these kids wearing the St Paul’s jerseys will be representing the HUH message week in week out. The conversations that are coming are the exact ones I badly needed as a child but I never had 🧠❤️

Mental Health Matters.
