It has been three years since I started working with natural fibers and natural dyes, and it has been a truly wonderful journey. I always wanted to document more of it, but I never really got the chance—until now.
Long before synthetic dyes existed, nature gave us a full spectrum of color. Conventional synthetic dyes rely on toxic fixatives, azo dyes, heavy metals (like lead and chromium), and formaldehyde. In contrast, natural dyes bound to natural fibers use non-toxic, plant-tannin mordants, eliminating our exposure to skin-absorbed carcinogens and endocrine disruptors.
When I started Anbhi, I knew I didn’t want it to be just another clothing brand. Coming from Santipur, starting a brand wasn’t the hard part—resources were everywhere. But were they all worth the time, effort, and money? Absolutely not. I was thorough with my research, and I stood firm on two non-negotiable principles: first, zero harmful chemicals or chemically treated fibers and dyes; and second, uncompromising sustainability.

If we don’t start embracing this work more deeply, we might just be the last generation to carry it forward. Power looms and mill-made fabrics produce mathematically flawless color—ours does not, and that imperfection is precisely where its beauty lies.

We have come a long way, but I still have miles to go before I sleep.
