Man Saved One of the World's Rarest Eagles with Nothing but Courage
What began as a routine trip to gather passion fruit turned into an extraordinary wildlife rescue.
On July 3, 2026, Marven Linoy entered a forest near the Sawaga River in Bukidnon, Philippines. While walking through the trees, he heard strange noises and followed the sound.
To his surprise, more than 30 monkeys were surrounding and attacking a large bird lying helpless on the ground.
Thinking quickly, Marven had no tools or weapons to scare the monkeys away. Instead, he barked loudly like a dog until the animals finally fled.
When he approached, he realized the injured animal was a critically endangered Philippine Eagle—one of the rarest birds on Earth.
The eagle was weak, covered in dirt, trembling, and unable to fly.
Afraid the monkeys would return, Marven stayed by the eagle's side instead of leaving for help. He gently covered her eyes with fern leaves to keep her calm and used his jacket to protect her while waiting for rescuers.
Local community members quickly alerted wildlife authorities. The eagle was safely transported for emergency veterinary care, where specialists treated dehydration, infections, and multiple wounds.
Veterinarians later discovered old pellet injuries and other signs that suggested the eagle had suffered serious trauma before she was found. Authorities are continuing to investigate what happened.
The rescued eagle was named **Sawaga-Dalwangan**, honoring the river and community where she was saved.
With only about 400 breeding pairs of Philippine Eagles remaining in the wild, every rescue is vital to the species' survival.
Marven wasn't a trained wildlife rescuer. He had no special equipment—only courage, compassion, and the decision to stay with an animal that needed help.
That simple act may have saved the life of one of the world's rarest birds.
