NJAL BLACK SHEEP: Mirabela Brînzan

FIRST INDEPENDENT COLLECTION, ‘Obsidian’

“The collection reflects transformation through pressure - the idea that identity and creative language are not formed instantly, but shaped through experience. Dark, protective and naturally formed, obsidian also reflects the tension at the heart of Brinzan’s work: strength and sensitivity, structure and vulnerability, history and futurism, rebellion and refinement.”

A COLLECTION AS AN ARCHIVE

“The ten looks exist as individual pieces, but together they form an archive of the designer’s development. Instead of erasing the past to establish something new, Brinzan allows previous work to remain visible. Earlier garments are placed alongside new designs, creating a dialogue between the designer she was, the designer she became, and the designer she is beginning to define. OBSIDIAN therefore sits between archive and beginning. It acknowledges the foundations while looking towards the future. Presented at This Is Icon, the collection marks Brinzan’s transition from student collections into an independent creative practice - establishing a foundation upon which future collections can grow.”

It was a pleasure to view NJAL Black Sheep .6 ‘s collection “Go Fly a Kite” at the One’s to Watch Edition 02 event during . Thank You .deapr and congratulations Sanjana 🖤

“‘Go Fly a Kite’ explores the journey of a kite, which embodies the human condition – brimming with potential, learning to move with the winds of life, and discovering the strength to repair and rise again. This collection is made from a paper textile developed through reversing bookbinding techniques – that plays with the illusion of fragility while remaining flexible and resilient, and is designed to endure movement.”

Collection: Otto/Olafur

“This collection is an endeavour to radically reinvent traditional Indian garment and textile hand-crafting techniques, interpreting them visually and materially through a sharp post-modern lens, influenced by architect Frei Otto’s tensile structures and artist Olafur Eliasson’s approaches to surface and colour.
Traditional ‘Naka-Tiki’ handmade fringes have been deployed in newer formats of tension, slack, and suspension. New-age TPU yarns have been twisted with traditional ‘Badla Dori’ yarns to create dynamic membranes. The conventionally decorative ‘Aari’ hand-embroidery has instead been utilized as a functional technique holding yarns on tension, and fabrics like chiffon and metallic-tulle have been micro-pleated on tension, by hand, to form angular panels.
The shapes and patterns of the garments also emerged from these complex and innovative textile elements. The unique manner in which they draped on the body, in meandering and structured forms, allowed us to strikingly reveal, conceal and sculpt the body in distinctive ways. This novel garment silhouetting approach, largely executed through ‘Chapa’ hand-stitching, formed the core tenant of this collection.
The contours and musculature of the body exquisitely interacted with these unusual dress shapes and intricate textile work. This visual composition became the predominant focus in the creative direction of the final Imagery. The lighting, styling and beauty elements were all curated to emphasize and accentuate its vividness.”

Collection: RESURRECTED 1912: THE NEW YORK ARRIVAL

“Inspired by the Titanic, RESURRECTED fulfills the unfinished 1912 voyage to NYC. The collection utilizes 100% recycled fabrics, transforming scraps into intricate trims. Through natural dying, vintage texturizing, and salt crystallization, it captures the last remains of the “maximalist Edwardian beauty” within decay. I imagine these pieces worn by women who, like myself, have crossed borders to New York with hearts full of hope. As I conclude my final chapter at Parsons, I seek to fulfill their unfinished voyage and honor their spirits. Reimagining Edwardian silhouettes for today, RESURRECTED proves that the elegance of those lost souls has finally arrived at the current status quo.”

Collection: Too Seen

“‘Too Seen’ explores the tension between internal repression in China’s feudal society and the external gaze of Western Orientalism, examining how these forces shape and reinforce one another when one enforcing control, the other romanticizing the East. Working from an Eastern female perspective, the project
deconstructs both feudal traditions and the Western gaze, challenging the authority that defines and confines the female body. Through tension-driven knitwear developed with vintage fabrics, and the use of stretchable materials to create distortion, the body is positioned as a site of conflict. The work ultimately subverts dominant ways of seeing and reflects on the deprivation of women’s emotional and bodily freedom, reclaiming authorship over representation.”

Collection: I hold on for dear life

“‘I hold on for dear life’ unfolds within a garden that once wrapped around my grandfather’s house. Though it no longer exists, its warmth, sense of safety, and quiet companionship remain. I return to it as a kind of sanctuary. It was a space shaped by companionship and innocence. I no longer recall the exact paths; the memory flickers, partial, fragile. It is within this in-between state that the collection resides: between holding on and letting go.
The work lingers in this moment of transition. A search for love, companionship, and belonging, a desire to be fully understood, without performance. We often seek resolution, but when reality settles, what remains is not certainty but its echo. What endures is a nostalgia for something that once felt whole, even as the real has quietly shifted beyond reach.”

Collection: Water Pulses

“Water is the fundamental substance of life, with both a visible and hidden aspect. According to a groundbreaking study by Dr. Emoto (1999), the molecular structure of water changes when exposed to human thoughts, words, and images. Dr. Emoto demonstrates how water exposed to negative and positive attributes transforms into different configurations.
Exposure of water to loving, benevolent, and compassionate intentions results in pleasant physical molecular configurations in the water, while water exposed to negative, frightening, and incompatible intentions undergoes distorted molecular configurations.
The collection explores the interplay between the visible and the hidden and the life force that responds to and interacts with humanity. Through polyester casting and work with dense and transparent materials, the collection expresses an interpretation of this unique and fascinating phenomenon.”
