In 1938, driven by a vision for empowering weavers, Mr. A G Alse, Shree P A Pai, Shree Rama Rao, and Shree Kalmadi Gururaja Rao founded the Udupi Weavers Society, the first of its kind across two districts. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, eight co-operative societies emerged, thanks to the efforts of these visionary leaders. Their impact is woven into the fabric of our heritage.

Here, we can see a simple yet elegant Udupi saree, worn by Smt. Lalitha Kedlaya, which holds a piece of history woven into its threads. She is the daughter of one of the founders of the Udupi Weavers Society, more commonly known as "Society Rama Rao".

Shree Rama Rao's dedication to marketing, innovative dyeing techniques, and building a weavers' colony in Udupi left an indelible mark on the community. Now, his granddaughter, Shobitha Kedlaya, co-founder of Book-a-Loom along with other visionaries, continues his mission.
