Vintage resist printed textile in the traditional Katar Bhant pattern, traditionally worn by women of the Raika community in western Rajasthan.

Handprinted in natural dyes, the textile carries elongated katari motifs running across the fabric, alongside softened madder-red checks and deep indigo-black tones seen in older desert textiles of western Rajasthan.

The aged surface, gentle irregularities, and depth of colour are difficult to recreate today.

This Mother’s Day, I wish to share a few memories from my own life — ones that somewhere also aligns with the soul of NeelKotri.

After my marriage, the transition from my hometown to my husband’s home in a village was naturally an overnight change — a new home, a new environment, and unfamiliar emotions. But from the very first day itself, I could feel the quiet presence of a mother in that house.

I had lost my own mother at a very young age, and while my father lovingly raised us with immense affection, there were certain quiet details of a home that perhaps only a mother notices and builds over years.

My father-in-law had retired from the armed forces and chose to settle in his ancestral home, as he was deeply attached to his roots.
The house was simple, yet deeply comforting. My mother-in-law, a simple and hardworking lady, had filled the smallest corners of the home with warmth and care.

An empty Brook Bond packet carefully fixed to the wall to collect hair after combing.A big earthen pot with an electric rod, carefully covered with a cloth to keep the water warm during winter mornings. A laundry bag hanging behind the bathroom door. Handmade curtains, table covers, little storage ideas, shoe racks — all created with care long before words like “DIY” even existed.

These little images are still like snapshots in my mind. From the very first day, I found myself quietly going, “aha…” at these small but thoughtful things.

They were ordinary things, perhaps. But they carried thoughtfulness, care, warmth, and a certain simplicity that stays with you. Slowly, I realised that this is what a mother quietly builds over years — not just a house, but a feeling of belonging.

And perhaps that is why today, the idea of slow living, handmade things, thoughtful details, and simple homes is finding its way back again — because somewhere, they bring peace to the mind and strength to the heart.

Today, on Mother’s Day, I simply feel gratitude for all those mothers whose love quietly lives in the smallest details of everyday life.

Happy Mother's Day.
