For me, Onam has always carried the feeling of coming home.

And somewhere in that feeling lives the Kasavu. Not just in its ivory and gold, but in the hands that preserve it, the women who pass it down, and the memories that return every time it is draped.

Because the most beautiful sarees aren’t always the ones we buy for an occasion.

Sometimes, they are the ones we inherit with a story already woven into them.

This Onam, may your celebrations be filled with the warmth of home, the comfort of old memories, and the joy of creating new ones.

There was a time when Dolly Jain draped a saree on a woman, never imagining that she was draping it on Tamil Nadu’s, one of the most formidable political figures.

Later that day, while speaking to her husband about the women she had draped, Dolly realised that the woman was Jayalalithaa!

The photograph, from around 1964–65, captures Jayalalithaa at the beginning of a remarkable journey, from a brilliant student and trained classical dancer to an accidental actress, and eventually, one of India’s most powerful political figures.

And the saree would remain an important part of that journey.

In 1989, a torn Kanjeevaram saree became the image of a moment that would define her political resolve. She walked out of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly with a vow to return only as Chief Minister. Two years later, she did.

Perhaps that’s what makes these photographs feel even more special today. Before the politics, before the power, before the iconic Kanjeevaram became part of her public identity, there was simply a woman in a saree.

Some Kisseh are remembered because history made them important. Others become important because we were lucky enough to witness them.

There’s always that saree in a family that seems to know when a celebration is about to begin.
