Bikudesigns

Bikudesigns Repurposing forgotten things. Vintage kimono jewellery from Japan. Handmade, limited edition pieces. I live in a bohemian part of Tokyo called Shimokitazawa.

My name is Victoria and I'm the sole designer and maker at Bikudesigns. I've been living in Japan for over 2 decades and I'm originally from the UK. I started making costume jewellery when I was a teenager and as an adult I turned to more serious materials such as gold, silver, semi-precious and precious stones. While studying in New York I learned classical jewellery techniques at The Jewelry Art

s Institute as well as commercial jewellery production and diamond setting at Studio Jewelers. In Japan my jewellery studies continued in a more apprenticeship-style approach, where accuracy was the key and the curriculum was prescriptive. All of these methods gave me a good grounding for my metalwork skills as well as giving me the opportunity to develop an understanding of my own design aesthetic. Stepping away from jewellery design for a time while my children were small babies, I embarked on Ikebana (Japanese flower art) training. After a period of 5 years or so, I eventually became a Sogetsu teacher-trainer. Flowers, and the passing of the seasons, are still a constant source of inspiration to me, especially as I am now surrounded by seasonal kimono silk designs from across the decades. And here I am, in my tiny little studio, packed to the gills with materials, happy to be back at the bench again.

Welcome to Patricia from TABITABIYA (Patricia) who will be a guest teacher at Studio Biku this September.

Patricia’s beautiful vintage kimono pouches and bags are already stocked in the studio shop but this time she’s back to teach a workshop on how to use these textiles to create a bolster-style throw cushion.

The spots are very limited to ensure you get all the instruction you need.

No need to bring a thing! We provide the machines, needles, thread and fabric (as well as tea & coffee).

Book at the link in bio (workshops).

PS We provide instruction in English, French & Japanese for this workshop.

I’ve been a bit quiet on Instagram this week because I’m taking a few days to recharge in nature.

I chose a few of my fave texture photos to show you what it feels like to be here.

Any guesses where I am?

See you when I’m back in Tokyo.

It’s easy to see the flaws in our work.

The disappointment when things don’t work out is quite the thing. The failed challenges, the wonky stone settings, the melted parts.

Over the years there has been something that made me keep the work I didn’t like. I wasn’t too ashamed of it to melt it down and recycle it into something else, I think I saw it as part of my learning. A sketchbook of ideas in silver jewellery form.

And now I’m so glad I kept it all. Miss 16 gets a thrill every time she uncovers something new and now wants to learn how to make her own precious metal jewellery.

Time to dust off the jewellery bench…

✨ Meet our next SWAP Guest Speaker 🎙️

We’re delighted to welcome Victoria from Biku Designs to SWAP on August 8th.

Victoria is a jewellery designer whose work celebrates creativity, craftsmanship, and the stories we carry with us. During this special session, she’ll share her creative journey, the inspiration behind Biku Designs, and how meaningful design can connect us to ourselves and others.

Whether you’re curious about jewellery, creativity, or the courage it takes to build something of your own, this is a conversation you won’t want to miss.

We can’t wait to welcome Victoria to the SWAP community. 💜

To support the wonderful work of .seva.japan who work with people experiencing homelessness and food insecurity in Yoyogi Park, I’ll be collecting cans of tuna at Studio Biku.

Drop off a can or two during open studio time, when you visit for a workshop/ during a community event or leave a can at the door if I’m closed.

Thanks so much for your support.

Victoria x

Thank you to who’ll be supporting me with this project.
