Bikudesigns

Bikudesigns Repurposing forgotten things. Vintage kimono jewellery from Japan. Handmade, limited edition pieces. I live in a bohemian part of Tokyo called Shimokitazawa.

My name is Victoria and I'm the sole designer and maker at Bikudesigns. I've been living in Japan for over 2 decades and I'm originally from the UK. I started making costume jewellery when I was a teenager and as an adult I turned to more serious materials such as gold, silver, semi-precious and precious stones. While studying in New York I learned classical jewellery techniques at The Jewelry Art

s Institute as well as commercial jewellery production and diamond setting at Studio Jewelers. In Japan my jewellery studies continued in a more apprenticeship-style approach, where accuracy was the key and the curriculum was prescriptive. All of these methods gave me a good grounding for my metalwork skills as well as giving me the opportunity to develop an understanding of my own design aesthetic. Stepping away from jewellery design for a time while my children were small babies, I embarked on Ikebana (Japanese flower art) training. After a period of 5 years or so, I eventually became a Sogetsu teacher-trainer. Flowers, and the passing of the seasons, are still a constant source of inspiration to me, especially as I am now surrounded by seasonal kimono silk designs from across the decades. And here I am, in my tiny little studio, packed to the gills with materials, happy to be back at the bench again.

Ready to finally make friends with a sewing machine? 🧵✨

We’re hosting a super intimate beginner in-person workshop with Aims from Indy Bindy at Studio Biku, just 4 spots, so you’ll get plenty of hands-on guidance and zero overwhelm.

You’ll learn all the essentials:
* Understanding your machine
* How to thread your sewing machine
* Winding and inserting a bobbin
* Basic stitches
* Sewing straight lines and curves
* Turning corners
* Simple construction techniques
* What to do if things go wrong
* The confidence to use your machine at home

…and by the end, you’ll walk away with your very own drawstring bag made from a curated selection of 6 beautiful cotton prints.

Perfect if you’ve been curious but didn’t know where to start, or if your sewing machine has been quietly judging you from the corner 👀

Spots are limited (like, really limited), so if you’re in, grab your ticket soon.

Did you catch the April Edit newsletter last night?

In case you missed it, I'm only sending one newsletter a month these days. I'm doing a summary of everything that's happening in my business, events at the studio, restocks and new work, YouTube content and some general musings.

This month there's a big restock of Choose Your Own Charm Wrap Bracelets.
10 charms to choose from.

Squished.

Seasons come and go in a blink of an eye.
We’re already at the end of azalea season. Time marches.
Stomps on the blossoms.

Anyone else feeling pensive lately?

Day 11 of 14.
Almost there!

Today I’m using flowers to print on rescued kimono silk using the Cyanotype technique.

See you tomorrow for day 12.

Day 10 of Cyanotype on vintage kimono lining.

Today I’m using some old, slightly brittle thread to make accidental lines on the silk.

I love this one. 🩵💙

Day 9/14 Cyanotype on rescued kimono silk.

This time I’m using a regular kitchen item to make a subtle textural print.

I can’t wait to share what I’m going to do with the finished silk samples.

Day 8/14: Cyanotype on vintage kimono lining.

Today I’m using some recycled card packaging, revealing some of the interior texture.

I love how this turned out.

A place to play, to create, to experiment, to share, to welcome community, to collaborate… a creative sanctuary.

I love coming into the studio everyday to see what unfolds. This is a quick snapshot of what’s emerging in April 2026. In a month’s time, it will look different. Always something new to discover on the horizon.

Hope to see you soon.

Day 7/14 of Cyanotype on vintage kimono silk lining.

Today I’m experimenting with pressed leaves from the garden.

TOP TIP waiting for 24 hours for the fabric to dry gives great results!
