A few days ago, I was in a shop when I saw a mother struggling to calm her young child. The child was extremely active, running around, crying and throwing tantrums. Like many people around me, my first instinct was to wonder whether the child was simply "naughty."
Then I paused and reminded myself: we don't know the whole story.
Not every active or tantrum-prone child has ADHD, but some children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) may have difficulty sitting still, controlling impulses, regulating emotions or paying attention. These behaviors are not a result of poor parenting or intentional disobedience.
As a society, we should be slow to judge and quick to show empathy. Parents are often doing the very best they can and some children are navigating challenges we cannot see.
Awareness leads to understanding. Understanding leads to compassion.
💙 Let's replace judgment with empathy and stigma with support.
