Beach or Bali? What's your idea of remote work?

'Remote work' or 'work from home' in Nairobi, Lagos, or Maputo

Is no different from New York, London, or Melbourne...

And many desire more.

More like - 'work from anywhere'...

Like Bali or the beach.

For the women I work with, 'remote work', 'work from home' or 'work from anywhere' is a little different.

And I'm excited to make it a common option.
One that pays fairly for skills.

My sister, Jean Adero - Africa’s Life Coach, is passionate about designing a life that you intentionally create.

She coaches leaders to end the 'mind drama' that keeps them from the...

- promotion
- business deal
- wealth

To belong to themselves so they can take up space in the world. And to...

- stop waiting to be invited to the table
- choose what brings them joy
- decide how they show up at work unapologetically

Yet, when she was invited speak at Google last year...

- She chose the ANNA ADERO dress she was going to wear the night before
- Then questioned whether it was 'appropriate' for the occasion in the morning

Maybe it was too LOUD...

Yet, professional women and men on the African content wake up every morning and

- wear the most colorful, fabrics and styles, and
- show up as subject matter experts in their professions

They are wildly successful.

When she told me about her thoughts, I remarked out loud...

"The belonging coach was questioning whether her cultural print was appropriate for a belonging conversation?"

And she responded...

"Imagine that..."

But, she wore the dress anyway - and she felt proudly Kenyan (and American).

My inner dialogue: "Who does she think she is, questioning me in front of everyone?"

Years ago, while teaching new designers, a student challenged my approach boldly, and in front of the class.

My instinct was to react.

I wanted to defend my expertise, but I paused and then breathed.

Instead of meeting resistance with resistance and said...

“Tell me more.”

That shift changed everything.

- The room stayed engaged
- The student felt heard, and
- I remained in control

The lesson?

When you stay calm in the chaos, you control the room.

Luxury fashion sells dresses for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

But how much do the workers who make them—many in Africa—actually earn?

A few dollars a day.
Sometimes less.

And the ripple effect?

When creatives aren’t paid fairly, the entire economy suffers.

Skilled artisans abandon their craft.
Local businesses collapse.
Future generations stop seeing fashion as a viable career.

Fashion is art.

But should it be exploitation?

I think it’s time for transparency.
It’s time for fair wages.

I gave my client a fashion intervention in 2022.

She was carrying COVID pounds but was still wearing her pre-pandemic clothes.

I had designed her dresses and could see that they were ill-fitting.

She wanted a new collection, yet she had canceled three consultations.

All three cancellations were followed by a call complaining about her unsupportive boss and toxic workplace.

When she called to make her fourth appointment she complained about her work.

I took a breath and then asked...

'Is the work collection we created still working for you?'

She paused... then continued... 'And that's another thing...'

It wasn't another thing. It was the thing.

I was surprised when I learned that my hard work won’t speak for itself.

I learned that you can put in the hours and be the best at what you do, but if no one knows, does it even count?

Success isn’t just about talent.

It’s about visibility and knowing your worth.

It is a good idea to advocate for yourself and share your wins.

Or build a network that speaks your name in rooms you are not in.

Your career growth is not just about working.

It's about making sure that you are noticed.

My client celebrated her 46th birthday with a Nairobi street photo shoot.

2021: She shifted her mindset from 'life is tough' to 'I celebrate each birthday with a fun, light, and airy vibe photoshoot of gratitude'.

2022: She chose a red dress.

2023: She chose a black dress.

2024: She did something different after seeing an Instagram reel of Puerto Rican street dancers twirling in colorful dresses.

I provided her with options from my collection to match the occasion.

Then I localized the style for her African taste and to suit her body.

And used her measurements on file to create the style.

She loved the dress.

Then worked with street photographers on Kenyatta Avenue, Nairobi, who are college graduates (some in Engineering and Mathematics) seeking full-time employment.

I discovered that the dress carried joy, self-expression, and celebration.

While the whole experience exuded gratitude and presence.

Fashion is more than just the use of fabric to make dresses.

It’s a statement and can be a moment in history.

Remember Michelle Obama in her elegant white gown at the Inaugural Ball?

That dress was beautiful and symbolic.

It represented the power of a woman redefining the world’s expectations.

Fashion has the power to mark a moment.

But bigger than that, we get to choose how we express ourselves

Your Africa-made dress shouldn’t cost less than your weekly morning coffee bill.

Behind every handmade piece is sacrifice.

African seamstresses and garment makers work long hours.

They buy fabric at high prices.
They stitch by hand when machines fail.
They pour their skill, culture, and soul into every design.

Yet, their work is undervalued.

A dress that takes days to make is expected to cost less than a week’s worth of coffee.

If you admire our craft, respect our labor.
Pay us what we’re worth. Honor our artistry.

Keep our businesses alive.
