Why can two recycled promotional products from the same order look slightly different?

Because recycled material is not always perfectly uniform, and that is often part of what makes it recycled in the first place.

When a product is made from virgin material, the manufacturer has much tighter control over the exact colour, texture and appearance of the raw material.

With recycled materials, the input can contain material that has already had another life.

That can create small variations in:
• Colour tone
• Surface texture
• Speckling
• Fibre appearance
• Finish from one production batch to another

You may notice this on recycled plastic products, recycled paper, recycled cotton bags, notebooks and products made using mixed or reclaimed materials
That does not automatically mean something is wrong with the product.

In many cases, those small differences are simply a characteristic of the material.

It is also why recycled products should not always be judged in exactly the same way as a perfectly uniform glossy plastic item.

If your branding depends on an extremely precise product colour, tell the supplier before choosing the product.

The logo can still be colour matched accurately, but the material underneath it may naturally vary.

And sometimes that variation actually suits the product.

A recycled notebook with visible fibres or a recycled plastic item with subtle speckling can make the material feel more authentic than trying to make it look like conventional plastic.

The important thing is knowing what to expect before production.

Recycled does not have to mean inconsistent quality.

But it can mean accepting that every piece does not need to look absolutely identical.

The same promotional product should not automatically go to everyone.

A giveaway for 2,000 event attendees and a gift for 20 important clients are solving completely different problems.

But businesses often start with the product first:
“We want branded bottles.”

The better question is:
“Who are we giving them to, and what do we want the item to do?”

For a large public event, the priorities might be:
• Low cost per person
• Easy distribution
• Compact storage
• Immediate usefulness
• Simple branding

For employees, the priorities can change:
• Something they will use regularly
• Better quality
• Consistency across the team
• Easy reordering later

For important clients, it changes again:
• Higher perceived value
• More subtle branding
• Better presentation
• Something appropriate to the relationship

Even within the same product category, the answer can be completely different.

A basic reusable bottle may be perfect for 1,500 event attendees.

A better insulated bottle may make far more sense for 50 employees.

And for a small number of key clients, a premium version with discreet branding could be the strongest option.

None of those choices is automatically “better” than the others.

They are better for different audiences.

This is why we prefer to know who the merchandise is for before recommending products.

The more specific the audience, the easier it becomes to spend the budget where people will actually notice the difference.

More colours do not automatically make branding look better.

Sometimes the cleanest promotional products use only one colour.

Businesses often assume that because their logo contains several colours, every branded item should reproduce the full logo exactly as it appears on screen.

But the product itself matters.

A full-colour logo can look excellent on a white notebook or tote.

On a premium black bottle, metal pen or darker product, a simple white, silver or tonal version of the same logo can look much more refined.

There are also branding methods where colour is not really the point at all.

Laser engraving creates a permanent mark by changing or removing the surface.

Debossing presses the logo into the material.

Embroidery can sometimes look stronger when the artwork is simplified to one or two thread colours.

Even a basic one-colour print can look very clean when the product and artwork work together.

The important thing is to have approved versions of your logo for different situations:
• Full-colour logo
• Black version
• White / reversed version
• Simple one-colour version
• Symbol-only version where space is limited

This gives much more flexibility when branding merchandise.

It can also help control cost.
A complicated five-colour print may need a different production process from a simple one-colour logo, especially at larger quantities.

But the biggest benefit is not necessarily price.
It is appearance.

Sometimes the most professional branding is the version that knows when to be quieter.

Your logo does not always need to shout to be noticed.

Yes, it’s September.

Yes, we’re already talking about Christmas.

And no, we have not completely lost the plot.

If you want standard Christmas merchandise with your logo added, there is still plenty of time.

But if you want something genuinely custom made for your brand, now is when the conversation should start.

We are talking about products made specifically for you:
• Custom shapes
• Pantone-matched colours
• Bespoke Christmas decorations
• Custom plush items
• Specially manufactured gifts
• Products designed around your brand, mascot or campaign
• Merchandise that does not already exist in somebody else’s catalogue

These projects take longer because the product is not sitting on a shelf waiting for a logo.

There may be artwork and technical drawings to prepare.

Samples to approve.
Materials and colours to confirm.
Production to complete.

And then the finished goods still need to get to Malta before everyone disappears for Christmas.

The advantage?
Your client is probably going to receive a lot of branded gifts in December.

Another standard mug is competing with another standard mug.

A product created specifically around your company is much harder to confuse with everybody else’s.
Done properly, fully customised merchandise can turn a Christmas gift into something people actually talk about.

The downside is that you cannot usually decide on 10 December that you would like 1,000 completely bespoke products by Christmas.

Factories are good.
They are not Santa’s workshop. 🎅

So if you are thinking about doing something different this Christmas, September is a very good time to start.

You do not need the finished idea yet.

Send us the quantity, rough budget and what you want the gift to achieve, and we can start looking at what is realistically possible.

Need branded merchandise but do not want to spend hours searching through catalogues?

Send us the brief and let us do the searching.

We work across a wide range of promotional products, branded clothing, event merchandise, staff items and corporate gifts, so you do not need to come to us with an exact product code already chosen.

A typical enquiry might be:
"We need merchandise for 300 conference attendees. Budget is around €8 per person. We need everything delivered by the first week of October."
From that, we can start building options around the things that actually matter:
• Your budget
• Quantity
• Audience
• Required delivery date
• Branding requirements
• How the products will be used
• Whether you want one strong item or a complete set

We can then narrow the market down to products that make sense instead of sending you hundreds of links.

If the budget is tight, we will look for where the money has the most impact.

If the deadline is tight, we will focus on realistic stock and production options.

If you want something more premium, we can compare better materials, finishes and branding methods.

And if you have several requirements at once, send them together.

Uniforms, bottles, notebooks, bags, lanyards, event giveaways, staff gifts and more can all be handled as part of the same project.

You tell us what you are trying to achieve.
We help work out what to put your logo on.

A bigger product does not always mean a bigger branding area.

This catches people out quite often.

You might look at a large bottle, backpack or umbrella and assume we can simply make the logo much bigger.

But the usable branding area is determined by the shape and construction of the product, not just its overall size.

A few examples:
• A bottle may be 25 cm tall, but the printable area could be much smaller because the body curves or tapers.

• A backpack may have a large front panel, but zips, seams, pockets and padding can restrict where a logo can actually be applied.

• An umbrella has plenty of surface area, but printing normally has to stay within individual panels and away from seams.

• A pen is long, but the printable area may only be a small section of the barrel because the product has clips, curves and moving parts.

The branding method matters too.
Pad printing, screen printing, embroidery, transfer printing and laser engraving all have different physical limitations.
This is why we sometimes recommend changing the artwork instead of simply shrinking it.

A wide logo with a long strapline may look terrible squeezed into a narrow 40 mm print area.

A cleaner version containing just the symbol or company name can often look much stronger.

One useful thing every business should have is a small-format version of its logo for merchandise.

Something designed specifically for smaller branding areas.

Because the goal should not be:
"Make the logo as big as possible."

It should be:
"Make the branding look right on the product."

Sometimes a smaller, properly positioned logo looks far more professional than using every millimetre of available print space.

Two promotional products can look almost identical in a catalogue and still be completely different products.

This is why comparing promotional merchandise only by the photo and unit price can be misleading.

Take something simple like a tote bag.
Two bags might both be described as:
“Cotton tote bag, natural colour, printed with one logo.”
But one could be 100 gsm cotton and the other 180 gsm.
One might have short handles.
The other might have reinforced long handles.
One may use a very basic fabric construction.
The other may feel noticeably heavier and survive repeated use much better.

The same thing happens with bottles, pens, notebooks, clothing and almost every other promotional product.

When comparing quotations, look beyond the headline price.
Check:
• Product material and weight
• Dimensions and capacity
• Branding method
• Number and size of print positions
• Number of print colours
• Packaging included
• Delivery costs
• Production lead time
• Whether setup or origination charges are included
• Whether the exact same specification is being compared

Even the branding method can change the price substantially.

A one-colour screen print, full-colour transfer, embroidery and laser engraving are completely different production processes.

So if Supplier A is €0.40 cheaper than Supplier B, it does not automatically mean Supplier A is cheaper.

They may simply be quoting a different product or a different branding specification.

When comparing merchandise quotes, compare the specification first.
Then compare the price.

That is the only way to know whether you are actually getting better value or simply getting less product.

Most businesses think about branded merchandise when they have an event.

That is probably the most obvious use for it, but not necessarily the most valuable one.

One of the strongest uses of merchandise is simply staying visible after a conversation has finished.

Think about a salesperson visiting a client.

The meeting lasts 45 minutes.
The presentation gets closed.
The email gets buried.
The LinkedIn post disappears down the feed.

But a decent notebook, bottle, umbrella or desk item can stay in that customer's office for months.

That does not mean handing out random products to everybody.
The item still needs to make sense.

A few situations where merchandise can work particularly well:
• After an important sales meeting
• As part of a new-client welcome
• With samples or product presentations
• For staff onboarding
• As a thank-you after completing a large project
• Before a conference or event
• With a direct-mail campaign to selected prospects

The interesting part is that the product does not need to be expensive.
A €5 item that gets used every week can have far more marketing value than a €20 gift that looks impressive for five minutes and then disappears into a drawer.

I would choose the product based on one question:
"What would this person genuinely keep near them?"
For an office worker, that might be a notebook or good pen.

For someone travelling regularly, it could be a bottle, umbrella or tech organiser.

For staff, it might be clothing or something they use every day at work.

Promotional merchandise works best when the advertising is almost secondary.

Branded merchandise is not just “free stuff with a logo on it.”

Used properly, it can do something digital advertising struggles to do: put your brand physically into someone’s everyday routine.

A Google ad disappears the moment you stop paying for the click.

A useful bottle, notebook, tote, umbrella or piece of workwear can stay around for months.

That does not mean every business should start buying thousands of pens.

The product has to have a reason to exist.
Merchandise can be particularly useful when you want to:
• Stay visible after a meeting, event or campaign
• Give clients something they will actually use
• Make new employees feel part of the company from day one
• Give staff a consistent, professional appearance
• Turn an event giveaway into something people keep afterwards
• Give sales teams something physical to leave behind
• Reward customers or employees without relying on another discount

The important part is choosing merchandise around the objective.

If you want brand visibility, choose something that stays in regular use.

If you want to thank an important client, quality and presentation matter more than quantity.

If you are giving something to 2,000 event attendees, practicality and cost per person become much more important.

And if the product is useless, none of this matters.

The best promotional merchandise does not feel like advertising.

It feels like a useful product that happens to carry your brand.

That is when a branded item stops being a giveaway and starts becoming part of your marketing.

You do not need to know exactly what promotional product you want before asking for a quote.

In fact, some of the best enquiries we receive start with a problem, not a product.

For example:
"We have 500 people attending an outdoor event in September. Budget is around €2.50 per person. We want something useful, easy to hand out and not too bulky."

That is already enough to start building a sensible shortlist.

A good supplier should help you narrow the options based on:
• Quantity
• Budget per person
• Who is receiving the item
• Where it will be used
• Required delivery date
• Branding requirements
• How the items will be packed or distributed

From there, we can compare products that actually fit the brief instead of sending you 40 catalogue links and asking you to choose.

Sometimes the right answer is a basic product at a very good price.

Sometimes it is worth spending a little more for better quality, longer use or a cleaner branding result.

And sometimes the best decision is to remove an item completely and use the budget on something stronger.

That is how we prefer to work.
If you have an upcoming event, staff order, conference, campaign or client gift requirement, send us the quantity, deadline and rough budget.

We can help turn that into a focused shortlist with realistic options and pricing.
No need to know the exact product first.
